About Larry

I've learned in the 12 plus years of tutoring students that not everyone enjoys math as much as I do. I said it, I enjoy math! These students might be great artists, writers, or even skilled at lacrosse. They need to learn that they can do math to. They just need to experience some success first. To do this they need to expand their math skills and learn study skills to sustain that success. The lessons I plan try to develop that confidence in the students to let them realize that they can do it and teach them the skills to study math. Along with that, it's my job as a tutor to find the holes and gaps in the math skills and reteach them to the student. This is achieved by reviewing past work and communicating with the student's teacher as I try to get weekly updates. Not every lesson is the same, but I try to start with a review of past skills, fill in and support the gaps in learning and then work on the current topics.

A strength that I have as a tutor is perspective. As a Maryland certified teacher I taught elementary school for 3 years, middle school math for 4, and high school math for the last 8 years. I’m also an adjunct mathematics instructor at a local community college during the summer. I've experienced students struggling and having success at all levels. My own children give me perspective from the parent point of view to as they grow up and work in elementary and middle school. I've learned a parent it’s tough to keep up with all the changes in curriculum, especially with the common core.

It would be my pleasure to help you or your child find success in mathematics. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact me. Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I'm a high school mathematics teacher and also teach math classes as an adjunct at Carroll Comm College.

Common Core

I'm a Maryland State certified teacher who teaches from the common core curriculum. I helped write my county's high school geometry curriculum that is based on the common core.

Finite Math

I'm an adjunct instructor at Carroll Comm College in Westminster, Maryland. I'm currently contracted to teach finite mathematics and have successfully taught the class two other times. We use the 11th ed Goldstein book from Pearson which is titled "Finite Mathematics & It's Applications.

Praxis

I'm qualified to tutor Praxis because I've passed 3 of their tests to become certified to teach in Maryland. The current classes I teach in my current teaching assignment surpass the requirements to pass them.
