I have received a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and a Minor in Music-Vocal Performance at George Mason University. In addition, I have graduated from George Mason University with a Master's in Elementary Education (Internship in Professional Development Schools (PDS)-Year Long) in June of 2011. What I bring to tutoring includes effective communication skills, a strong acceptance of student involvement, and a strong desire to provide the students with an enjoyable and academic education.

I also have a great passion for music and am currently the vocal director at my church. When I lived in Florida, I was the vocal director for The Conservatory School.

I received my Bachelor's in Theater at George Mason University. In that program, I took many classes on the art of acting and the many approaches and techniques that one could make. One of these classes included an audition techniques class where I was taught how to approach an execute a theater audition. I have been a part of many theater productions both on on off stage and am very capable of getting students to become more confident on the stage.

Students from many different countries, coming to America with many different languages. The main focus in my teaching these students was to relay the importance and value of their culture, while teaching them the language (English) and culture of America. Since then, especially in getting my masters in education, I have worked more closely with students of different language backgrounds. In the 6th grade class that I am student teaching in now, over half of the class are ESL students; many being from Central America, one from Iran, one from Ghana, and one from China. In teaching the English language I begin with phonics, the sounds, of the language. I then connect those sounds to their corresponding letters. I allow all of my students to have a dictionary of translations between their language and the English language, so that connections can be made. I also use many visuals to connect the words of their language to the English language. Reading is the best way to learn a new language, because that reading can transfer into the spoken language. Many of my ESL/ESOL students who read more tend to excel and become comfortable with the language more quickly.

In my Master's program, I have had the opportunity to take two classes in literacy teaching and learning in diverse classrooms. It was in these classes and seminars that I was able to learn about phonics. I found that phonics is a method of teaching English speakers to read and write in that language. I was able to execute my learning of phonics in teaching kindergarten. Kindergarten is the age in America where most students learn to read and write. It is therefore important to teach students, whether they are learning this language for the first time or first learning to read/write, the various assortments of English sounds and the letters that correspond to those sounds. I have taught phonics’ many different stages, which includes teaching students that letters make up words and words make up sentences, etc. I have taught students that sounds blend together and make words and that, in the English language, some letters can make different sounds in one words than they do in another. I have taught phonics, whether I was teaching kindergarten and sixth, or substituting for other grades. It is always relevant in reading, writing, and spelling. In addition, I have passed the Virginia Reading Assessment, a large portion of which includes testing in the teaching of phonics.

I also know that studying does not just mean memorizing or reviewing material for the sake of a test. In the 6th grade class I am currently teaching, I have found study skills to be extremely important. I keep in mind that there are different types of learners. Some students learn more interactively, while some prefer to simply read the information. At the same time, I have taught the importance of differentiated studying. Organization is also a big component of study skills. In the classes I have taught, I have the students have a notebook/binder for each subject. I also have the students in higher grades use index cards for study purposes. I give exercises and games of the material to add the interactive and fun component.
