Hello, and thank you for taking the time to view my profile! I have made a career of science and teaching, currently holding a bachelor's in Biology (Ithaca College), a doctorate in Physiology and Biophysics (University of Alabama at Birmingham), and a master's in Educational Studies (Johns Hopkins University). I have worked in the fields of science education and science research for a combined 15+ years. Following the completion of a cancer research postdoctoral fellowship, I left the bench to work in a local school district where I taught Biology, Environmental Science, and Technology.
My personal expertise allows me to educate and tutor middle school to graduate level students. With each age group pedagogically appropriate methods are utilized to ensure the student grasps the material to the best of his or her ability. My primary focus is on the STEM fields, including but not limited to:
Biology - middle school life school, all high school level through all graduate (including nursing, masters, and doctorate) level courses.
General Chemistry - high school through college level
Physiology - high school through a graduate level
Science Test Prep - AP Biology, AP Chemistry, HSA Biology, MSA Biology, SAT II Biology
Mathematics - Algebra I
Technology - basic courses including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel
Furthermore, I have recently begun to tutor elementary students in reading following district approved curricula.
Finally, as an educator I have worked in large classroom environments and one-on-one with students are varying intellectual capacities, including students who require special education services. I use proven methods to ensure learning, understanding, and memorization including, when applicable, kinetic, visual or auditory models. Tutoring sessions are individualized to meet the educational needs of the student.
As my clients are the most important part of my tutoring business, I want to ensure they are completely satisfied with my tutoring services. Subsequently, while I ask people contact me 1-hour in advance, I do not have an official cancellation policy as I understand emergencies do happen. I will only charge for no call/ no show appointments.
Please feel free to contact me with additional questions. I look forward to working with you/your student to ensure the success within the STEM disciplines. Lynda was friendly and patient with my daughter. She explained what mistakes my daughter is making and offered some suggestions for proofreading her work. Great first lesson - we will be calling her again :)
Lynda was able to explain Chemistry in a way that helped my daughter grasp the subject. She earned an "A" in Honors Chemistry, thanks to Lynda.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
