About Kepa

Hello everyone!

I'm glad that you decided to learn more about me! I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and a DC Special Education Teacher's License for grades K-12. My training, degree, and experience have equipped me to work effectively with students with special needs, as well as general education students. Some of that training is listed in the paragraph below. I also have a Bachelor's of Science in Music from Temple University.

I have been doing some type of tutoring or education for more than 15 years now. I worked as a Special Education Teacher for the past 5 years as an Elementary Special Education Teacher (Grades 1-5) at the Latin American Bilingual Montessori Public Charter School (try saying that 3 times fast). Before that, I worked as a Music Production Teacher and Teacher's Aide at a Special Education high school called High Road Academy, before that I was substitute teacher for Prince George's county Public Schools while working part time as a tutor for two private tutoring companies. I've been an after school tutor for the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia, a number of non-profit after school programs, and even a tutor with an after school martial arts program. So basically, I know how to teach, and I love to do it.

In regards to music, I started piano lessons at the age of 6, starting composing/producing in high school, and, as a once aspiring film composer decided to fine tune those skills while in college as a music major. I did a music production internship with Jeff Gruber of Blue House Productions in Silver Spring, MD in 2003. That same summer, I also did an internship with Charlie Brissette, the film composer for the Jimmy Neutron cartoon on Nikelodeon. I earned a Modern Musician Certification through Berklee University's Coursera Courses, including a Musicianship, Songwriting, and Music Production Class. The Songwriting portion of the course was taught by John Mayer's songwriting teacher, Pat Pattison. I've written, arranged, and produced many of my own songs as well as projects for films or demos for other artists. I've led bands. I've performed spoken word poetry (writing since I was 8.) I even own my own piano lesson business. (www.pianoplayfully.com) Long story short, I know music, and I know lyrics. I've studied the crafts of songwriting, music production, and composition. I've taken college level courses in composition, orchestration, arranging, film scoring, music theory, ear training, and songwriting. I've also researched the craft through several books, and video resources from professional organizations like Berklee College of Music, CD Baby, and Taxi Music. I hoping to share all of that experience and research in convenient bite-sized pieces with you. ;-)

I look forward to the adventure of tutoring together!

For the past 7 years, I've taught math to students who were grade levels behind, in addition to being hindered by learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, or emotional disturbances. I've also received training in lower and upper elementary Montessori hands on Math Materials.

For the past 7 years I've taught reading and writing to English language learners, students with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other disabilities. I'm trained in the Lexia Reading Program, the Corrective Reading System, and Wilson Reading System reading interventions. I'm also familiar with Read Naturally program. I've taught anywhere from basic sentence writing to essays, poetry, and creative writing. The sky's the limit!

I've played piano from the age of six, produced from the age of 17, performed in bands, produced several types of projects, and written several songs.

I love education, music, songwriting, and I love to teach. When you combine skill and passion, you have the recipe for a great time learning. I hope we can work together soon!
