My name is Cortney. I am currently a 5th grade teacher in Prince George's County, Maryland. I currently hold a valid Maryland State Teaching license along with a teaching license from the state of New Jersey. I was previously a first grade teacher in New Jersey before relocating to Maryland. I have a son of my own and love helping children succeed in academic skills. My firs grade class was a total of 20 children where 17 of them were actually below first grade level in the beginning of the year. By the end of the year I have 15 of those 17 below students were reading at a high proficient first grade level. Teaching children how to read and reading comprehension is one of my specialties. I believe that children need a good foundation for reading with decoding and letter sounding recognition to help them succeed. For math, I believe the best way to help children is with manipulatives where applicable and also fluency of math facts.
I currently live in Waldorf, Maryland, Charles County and would be willing to travel up to 12 miles for tutoring. I would prefer to meet at either my home or at a location such as the Waldorf library. Any other quiet locations which may be in between both homes are also great for me. I am available on weekends to tutor along with nights during the week after 4:00 p.m.
I have 2 years experience with teaching the common core curriculum in first and fifth grade.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
