About Marian

I have more than 20 years experience working with children and adult learners. I attended Hampton University and received a bachelor's degree in psychology and learning and behavioral disorders. My certifications were issued in the States of Virginia and Maryland. I am a former special education teacher in Maryland. I taught in Prince George's County where I was assigned to Kindergarten through 6th grade. In Montgomery County, I taught reading and social studies. My students' disabilities ranged from learning disabilities to orthopedic impairment, to serious emotional disturbance.

Some of the techniques I used included dissection of skills, lesson and content modification, real world experiences/examples, scaffolding and a trademarked program called Touchmath. I also utilized differentiated teaching modalities to reach different learning styles and reinforce fundamentals. Behavior management and modification was a large part of my responsibilities. I operated under the philosophy of positive reinforcement.

In addition to my formal training, I have a daughter with ADD. Being her advocate has allowed me the opportunity to be immersed in information about the ADD brain and personalities. I have even learned a thing or two about myself. Giving a student the sense that I know he/she is bright and has it within themselves to perform, is a large part of setting them up for success. I am constantly reading about new, as well as old, techniques, philosophies, and resources that might be the key for a specific individual.

I coordinated a small GED program for my church and assessed students using the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) at the University of the District of Columbia. At Prince George's Community College, I taught adult students functional reading, writing, and math for the workplace. Because much of learning is similar across the age continuum, I am able to use many of the same techniques with adults as I used with children. Taking into account that adults are more aware of their thinking, I respect this difference and offer them a chance to direct their own program. Slowing down to focus on the skills you want to improve until you are comfortable is my style. If you need a coach to help you stay on track with your own schedule or establish your schedule, I can do that too. I left daily teaching to work in social services in various positions as as caseworker, foster care trainer, and continuing education unit training coordinator for social workers and counselors at the master's and doctoral levels at Howard University's Gerontology Center.

As an adult student, I know that you have specific outcomes in mind. You want to get to what is really important and move on to that next step in your life. If you are interested in video-calls or other ways to make your sessions convenient, I am willing to explore those options. Lets make the most of your time and get you closer to your educational and career goals. I look forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
