I have extensive experience in all levels of Spanish, with eight years in two private High Schools, teaching Spanish 1-4, AP and Dual Credit. As an Adjunct Professor at Texas Wesleyan University, I taught three levels of Spanish. My academic credentials include a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs / Latin America Studies from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and graduation with honors in Spanish at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. In order to further my Spanish proficiency, I attended the Don Quixote Institute of Languages Superintensivo Program in Guanajuato, Mexico.

My strong passion for teaching Spanish to all age groups has resulted in my integrating multiple complementary techniques to reach the student. Through incorporating a wide variety of materials to aid in the learning process, I make learning a foreign language less intimidating. I want my students to have both a solid foundation and the comfort to enjoy Spanish.

My professional credentials in the Spanish language span three decades. As an Air Force officer in the 1980s, I was a specialist in Latin American intelligence, performing English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English translation services. I received a Master's degree in Latin America Studies from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and I graduated with honors from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Later I attended the Don Quixote Institute of Languages, Guanajuato, Mexico, attaining "advanced C1" level in their superintensivo course. During the past decade, I have been teaching all levels of Spanish in several private high schools and at a university. My teaching style includes a mix of technical grammar comprehension and immersion drills. I integrate a variety of techniques (visual aids, sound aids, animation, hands-on, verbal and nonverbal activities) to ensure complete understanding of the specific concepts.

Knowledgeable and Patient

Cynthia's first lesson with our son was the night before his mid-term exam. She worked patiently with him to help him understand some concepts he was just not getting. Cynthia went through the study guide provided by his teacher and made sure he had a firm grasp on the concepts being tested. He went into the exam with confidence and the results showed the value of her tutoring. Thank you!

Engaging and prepares tutor

She was prepared and made the lesson fun. My son enjoyed the first session and is looking forward to learning more. She gave exercises to practice between sessions but made sure there wasn't pressure.

Amazing Tutor!

Cynthia is an amazing tutor. I have struggled with Spanish all of my lift and never felt confident in the subject. But in order to graduate from my university, I need to complete university level Spanish 203. I could not have passed this class with out Cynthia's help. She was able to teach me the necessary grammar using my textbook and supplemental materials she provided. In addition, she helped me with listening, reading, speaking and long composition. Cynthia kept me on my toes, always challenging me and pushing me to tackle complex situations. Most importantly, she made learning Spanish enjoyable. She was always extremely flexible around my schedule, and when I could not meet in person, she was always willing to have a session online through Wyzant's platform. I strongly recommend Cynthia to anyone that needs a Spanish tutor. I would not have passed my class if it was not for Cynthia.

My boys loved working with her!

Cynthia reviewed basic Spanish grammar with my sons who are in a Spanish Immersion program. Their Spanish is at different levels, but she did a great job of working with them both. We'll see her again next week!

My kids love her

They dread working with tutors, in general. But, Cynthia keeps the session energized and fast paced. After every single session, they say it's definitely helping!

1st lesson went well

My daughter had her 1st lesson with Ms. Cynthia. She explained the subjunctive and preterite to her in ways that made sense. She is looking forward to her next lesson.

Great teacher with great sense of humor

We were extremely pleased with Cynthia's first visit with our 12 year old daughter who is taking her first year of Spanish. She brought training materials that were very helpful and taught our daughter techniques to help her memorize Spanish words and meanings . She is great with kids. She had our daughter laughing as she was learning. Our daughter said she really enjoyed working with Cynthia and she was very helpful. Cynthia has a very impressive resume of teaching Spanish and we are grateful to have her helping our daughter.
