I am certified by the State of Maryland to teach Spanish, Latin, French, and ESOL! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Towson University with a Bachelors in Modern Foreign Languages. I studied in Cuzco, Peru and Valencia, Spain, worked in Spain and Italy, and have traveled to over a dozen countries. Don't let that fool you though - I am qualified and excited to teach many subjects beyond languages and at ALL levels pre-K through adult!
I absolutely adore teaching and tutoring. For me, it all started when my high school principal called me at 15 years old. She asked if I could tutor an older student in Latin. He had failed miserably and needed someone to help him pass over the summer. We worked together and he raised his grade 70 points, to finish with a B. That student is now successfully pursuing a challenging degree a very prestigious school in the North East.
To be able to teach effectively is a gift that I choose to support with continual research, a strong skill set, and a personal dedication to each of my students. I love what I do and try to be as flexible as possible. Even if there is something you may be concerned about (i.e. pricing, distance), if you feel you would like to have me as a tutor, please contact me today. I started looking at Wyzant for my 12 year old son in June 2012. He needed help with reading. Liana was my first "pick" with Wyzant. She was very prompt in her reply, but she was not available. Liana suggested I contact her later in the summer. I am so glad I waited! She individualized the lessons, and changed them accordingly. There was one time when my son was just not in the mood for tutoring. They went through the shelves in the library versus sitting at the table. My son was smiling and participating by the end of the session.
My son did very well. He did so well, that we stopped tutoring earlier then anticipated. We will definitely use Liana in the future should the need arise. Don't spend time comparing tutors on Wyzant as I did. Liana is THE tutor.
Liana has tutored my daughter in both Latin and French. Liana is a gifted tutor. She has the rare combination of excellence in her content area and tremendous patience. My daughter has improved her language skills significantly as well as her confidence.
My daughter really enjoys working with Liana. She is now very confident with her French and Liana always manages to work with our busy schedule. Liana is very professional and organized as well as a great tutor. We feel very fortunate to have found her.
I was in a jam and need very detailed assistance. Liana was wonderful, and better than I expected a tutor could be. I totally endorse her work.
I can not say enough kind words to express how happy we have been with Liana. From the start, Liana did her homework asking about learning styles to contacting my daughter's French teacher. She was patient and tailored each lesson to meet specific concerns. Liana gives helpful feedback and more importantly, my daughter looks forward to her time with Liana.
My fammily lived in USA for last 1 year (Aug 2012- July 2013). I started looking at WyzAnt for my sons (8 and 12 year old) in Aug 2012 because my sons had grown up in KOREA after birth and then their speaking, hearing and writing of English were very poor. But, they met Liana and she changed everything of them. It was really amazing and almost miracle. She was very patient and talented tutor. My wife and I have really appreciated it till now. If you could not catch her, you will regret your bad choice forever.
I was looking for an English tutor to help my wife pass her HESI Admission Exams in Reading Comprehension. She had failed it twice before and had lost a lot of her confidence. I found Liana who only had one week to teach her in order to prepare for her exams. It was really incredible. She was calm and the most wonderful tutor we have ever known. Her teaching was... wow... there's nothing to complain about. In just one week she helped my wife regain her confidence and pass her exam with an incredible score. We therefore recommend her to anyone looking for the best tutor. Liana, you will forever be in our memory. Thank you very much.
Liana was very professional, understanding, patient, and encouraging in her tutoring skills with my grandson. I saw an immediate improvement in his study habits, retention and overall grade in Spanish. I highly recommend Liana as a tutor. I consider Liana's work with students outstanding!
It's easy to have a great lesson with Liana. She is very patient and has great positive energy. She has very clever suggestions and gives good explanations of the grammar or choice of words. She is a pleasure and I look forward to each session!
Liana is a wonderful and patient tutor. She has a good command of the language. She tailors the lessons based on the student's requirements so it is not a one size fits all deal. She is flexible and accommodates students' schedule.
My wife and I were searching for someone to tutor our daughter in Spanish in order to prepare for her middle school magnet assessment. My daughter was reluctant to commit to this particular study, but Liana was very instrumental in assisting us with making our decision understandable for her. Liana shared personal experiences and educated my daughter on the advantages of studying another language. She enjoyed her sessions, and we are grateful that we chose Liana. My daughter was confident when taking her test and did well. We highly recommend her services.
Thank you Liana for your hard work with me. I appreciate your time, your patience, your ability to make a tough subject interesting, and interactive
I am glad to have tutor like you.

Liana makes learning fun!She is very kind and is attentive to each child's learning needs.
She gives the student positive feedback and encouragement.
Liana is an excellent tutor. I am an adult student who needed help with my Spanish. She was able to quickly recognize the I am a visual learner and catered each session according to my learning ability. Liana is very encouraging and has a lot of patience. She was always on time and very very knowledgeable about all things Spanish. Liana definitely went above and beyond, even helping me write a paper in Spanish. I will be working with her again when fall classes begin.
Liana really has been working hard with my daughter to boost her confidence and find things that she is interested in. I'm really pleased with everything she has done.
It was a great way for my daughter to get some extra help this summer. I would highly recommend her to any one I know. She has been excellent.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored in math, science, social studies, Latin, Spanish, reading, writing, spelling, and study skills for K-6th. I am currently certified to teach in the State of Maryland. I have numerous letters of recommendation written pertaining to my elementary level tutoring which I would be happy to furnish if necessary. I have also taken Reading and Writing Courses directly related to the elementary grades while pursuing my Master of Education degree at the College of Notre Dame.
I have worked with students in Elementary Math for almost a decade and truly believe there is always a way to communicate any particular concept. Many of my students enjoy the games we play or creative activities we do together and don't even realizing we are practicing Math at all. Yet the skills they gain are undeniable. One of my most recent elementary students scored a 100% on three Math exams in a row, to the complete shock of everyone - except myself. I believe in my students' abilities and in my own. Added together, they equal success.
I have my teaching certification endorsement in ESOL and have taken several ESOL courses and professional developments outside of the endorsement. I currently hold a position as a foreign language educator AND a bilingual interventionist in which I work to incorporate best ESOL practices while respecting my students' diverse native languages, cultures, customs, and beliefs.
I have worked with ESOL students and families from Kindergarten through adult and really enjoy it. I have also begun tutoring for the TOEFL exam which is a wonderful experience for me and for my students! I have taught students from Asian, Hispanic, European, Middle Eastern, and African countries.
Outside of the United States, I have taught English in Peru, Spain, and Italy.
I have a great amount of experience working with students with special needs. Before I even entered a public school classroom, I helped students with a range of disabilities and challenges achieve success in subjects ranging from English to Math to Latin. Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger's Syndrome, are among the many disorders and disabilities I have been able to help students overcome in terms of their learning. As a public school educator, I have learned a great deal more through coursework and professional developments taken in Special Education, and have also successfully incorporated a long list of modifications and accommodations in my practice.
Teaching study skills is an essential part of all of my tutoring sessions, regardless of subject. Effective study skills begin with the identification of learning style - whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. I help students to understand what each type and combination of types mean and then work with them to understand how to utilize this knowledge to the best of their abilities. I also subscribe to Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and have done quite a bit of both academic and action research on this topic. I am able to quickly shift the content of a tutoring lesson into a different "intelligence vehicle" in order to bring clarity to the student. Then, I always make sure the student understands what I did and how he or she can do the same on his or her own.
I have utilized everything from highlighters and Post-It notes to graphic organizers and agendas, finger drawing in sand to writing raps for high school science. It is essential that students not only learn their content, but how to continue to advance as a learner. Other vital elements that I both explicitly and implicitly teach my students are time management, prioritization, motivation and reward, and advocacy.
I have worked as a journalist, copywriter, editor, proofreader, ghostwriter, and in several other writing capacities with great success. In addition to working with children of all ages, I have also worked with college students (both American and international), graduate students in many diverse programs, and even professionals in law, medicine, human resources, education, and small business. I am always thrilled to help others find the right words and convey their messages.
