University of Maryland, College Park
Although I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Communication, my earlier college years were dedicated to the Elementary Education program. Initially choosing teaching as my path, I completed the program almost in its entirety, including time spent student teaching in classrooms across Maryland. Not only were the foundations and principles behind teaching laid out to me, I was able to put my studies to work in an actual teaching environment
After graduation, I continued to work with students outside of my full time position, tutoring out of homes most often. Since moving to Baltimore in 2005, I was most recently a Math, English and study skills tutor for an eighth grade student attending a private school in Baltimore. Also, I was a substitute teacher/tutor with BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), in a Baltimore City public school.
It was because of these experiences that I truly learned how to organize, inspire, and motivate kids to be successful students: relating studies to everyday life, doing things that were educational yet still fun, teaching kids to be proud of good work, and tutoring the children after hours to achieve passing and improved scores on national tests are just a few of the real life challenges I faced.
Presently, I work with BUILD, an organization working in part to improve the lives of Baltimore youth. We have fought to keep recreation centers and pools open, have sponsored youth job programs, and have recruited some truly wonderful youth leaders, who inspire other kids to do great things.
I am well qualified and eager to begin tutoring your student!

Amy was very engaging with my daughter. They worked well together and my daughter even got a folder of various fun assignments to complete on the first day. I would recommend Amy to others.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Choosing Elementary Education as my college major was an easy decision. It was always my dream to be a teacher and I myself have always loved school. It is my goal as an elementary level tutor to instill in my young students the same curiosity, love of life and learning, and thirst for knowledge, that I had, and still do.
I was fortunate in that I had smart, caring, dedicated, thoughtful parents and teachers to guide me through my school years. I was taught skills that could be applied to all of learning, foundations that applied to every classroom and to all of education. Things like study skills, test taking skills, oral communication, and creativity, even positivity, strength, and perseverance are important and need to be taught to students at the elementary level. With these skills, students will be able to build on their knowledge as they progress forward in school.
I completed most of my degree, including student teaching, before changing my major to Communication. At the elementary level I have completed student teaching, have worked as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland, a private tutor, and an after-school tutor. I have also been a Special Education and ESL tutor in Baltimore City and presently am a tutor with Wyzant.
Although I do not have a certification in ESL, I do have experience tutoring ESOL in both the private and public arenas, as a tutor for both adults and children. I tutored students after school as a BELL tutor and specifically taught ESL and special needs learners. I have most recently helped adult students studying ESL. My education and tutoring background has provided me with the skills and experience necessary to help ESL learners practice, study, and learn effectively.
