About Frank

Hello! My name is Frank, and I have my bachelor's degree in applied mathematics. Rather than read a long paragraph, here are some quick bullet points about myself:

• I am a Middle School Teacher at a local Middle School
• I tutored for four years in college in various levels of math courses
• I worked for two years in an Americorps program focused on helping students improve on their math and ELA skills. While in this program, I received numerous trainings on tutoring skills developed in scientific research and proven to be successful
• Whenever I tutor I tailor my presentation to the student. I'm a pro at making math fun and I've always been very successful at tutoring.

• My students have always shown an increase in understanding and, consequently, an increase in grade. I can show a student how math is relevant and how a given topic can actually be used.

• I've always hated having the teacher who taught something "because we need to know it." I can explain WHY you need it and how it will be beneficial. In my experience, this makes learning the material easier and more enjoyable.

• I am also a very sociable and energetic person. If you need help with public speaking, I can show you ways and teach you how to make it easier and more comfortable. Public speaking can be scary, but have no fear! I can fix that fear!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am a 2012 graduate with a Mathematics degree, so any material on the ACT is familiar to me. I have studied that type of material in depth, so I will be able to explain the content in a way the student understands.

The topics covered on the ACT Math and their weight on the test are:

Pre-Algebra (23%)
Elementary Algebra (17%)
Intermediate Algebra (15%)
Coordinate Geometry (15%)
Plane Geometry (23%)
Trigonometry (7%)

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 can be taught at an insightful level so that the student can not only understand how to do a problem, but also why you do that. I can tutor Algebra 1 so that a student masters the material!

Algebra 2

Having been a 2012 graduate with a bachelor's in Applied Mathematics, I am quite familiar with the topics covered in Algebra 2 and I explain them in a way such that the student understands the information.

Please message me if you have any questions about my methodology.

I played competitive baseball from 7-16 and coached from 16-20. I have also gone to baseball camps and worked out for colleges. I can teach the basics and the more advanced skills.

I played four years of basketball in high school and have coached kids from 7-15. I know how to work on various skills and to hone abilities.

Calculus is typically the first upper level class a student takes and, consequently, a student does not know how to approach the class, material, or studying methods required.

Having tutored Calculus for many years, I understand both the materials and how to present the material so that the student understands it and can apply it to other types of problems. For true understanding, a student must know "why" the answer is what it is instead of just "how to get there." I can help with this process!

Discrete Math

I was an applied mathematics major through college. One class I took was based called "Discrete Mathematics with proofs." I have worked with discrete mathematics for multiple years while in college.

Elementary Math

Throughout my time in college, I worked with students in various age groups. A large amount of my time was spent working with younger students. Working with elementary students is different than working with older children. Younger children need to be more involved and engaged to the lesson. I provide this, as it is how I learn.

As a volunteer for a non-profit organization that focuses on math and English, I have received extensive training on how to tutor English. I was also a very strong English student in high school/college, and I have done many tutoring sessions in the subject.

Learning English is similar to learning other classes. The more engaged and active the student is in learning, the more they will understand it. I, as a student, needed to be engaged. I know how to engage students.

As a volunteer for a non-profit organization focusing in math and English, I have received extensive training on the pedagogy of tutoring math. I was also an Applied Mathematics major in college, so I have a deep understanding of the material.

Geometry is everywhere in the world. Show students how topics can be applied helps the process of learning the material.

As a college student, I was required to write a lot of papers. These papers varied in topic (creative writing, essay, research, etc.) and each had to be well written and concise.

As a volunteer for a non-profit organization that focuses on math and English, I have also received many trainings on teaching the material. I believe being active in the learning process is vital to understanding it.

Throughout my four years in college, we were required to do different projects using Mathematica. I also used it to do my senior research. Having it installed on my computer, I still use it when helping friends.

Microsoft Excel

Throughout my time in college, using Microsoft Excel was important because I consistently stored data and did data analysis. I used Excel for basic operations, and also ran mathematical tests to find results and present them. It really isn't that scary!

Microsoft PowerPoint

Powerpoint is a program used to make presentations. As a comfortable public speaker and presenter, having a strong visual presentation is vital. I've used Powerpoint in many different situations, and using it isn't difficult!

Microsoft Word

Throughout my time in both high school and college, I was required to write many papers. In the world today, handwritten materials are becoming less and less common. I have used Microsoft Word extensively, and I know both the simple and complex things it can do.

I can show you how to use Microsoft Word and the process of finding options.

As a tutor for 6 years, I have been presented with the material in Prealgebra numerous times and in numerous manners. Doing math and doing prealgebra isn't difficult. People tend to struggle with learning to think in the different manner needed to do math. I can help you learn to think like this and to dominate Prealgebra!

"Precalculus" sounds like a very scary word and a very scary subject, but it really isn't THAT bad! When teaching Precalculus, I can present the material so that the students why we arrived at an answer rather than just how. This understanding allows the student to process the steps and make them applicable to other types of problems. I can help this process!

P (me understanding probability) = 1

I have taken numerous levels of probability throughout college, and I have developed a strong understanding of the material at a basic level and a theoretical level. Understanding it in theory allows me to present the material and show how all of it works, rather than just learning how to do a specific problem.

I can explain probability so that the student can understand the material and the process.

P (your student being successful ) = 1

Do you need somebody to proof read your paper, even if it's due in a day or two? I'm the man! Throughout college many people came to me to edit their papers, and when I edit papers I correct standard grammar errors and content errors. I go through and I find ways to make papers even better than they are. I can review papers quickly too so that you have enough time to edit them!

Public Speaking

I have given many presentations throughout high school and college. I took a public speaking class during my time in college and I have presented personal research at a regional conference and to the professors at my college. At my current job, I have presented workshops to teammates.

Reading and reading skills are vital throughout your life. You read things everyday, and the ability to read and comprehend can't be stressed enough.

Working for a non-profit program specializing in reading and math, I have learned research proven techniques to help increase reading levels by a grade or even two! While I can't promise you'll be reading "War and Peace" by the end of the week, I can use proven techniques to help improve your skills.

SAT Math

The SATs are important to a student trying to enter college, and the scariest part is the math section. Don't be afraid though! I know sound techniques for not only the material, but HOW TO TAKE THE TEST. If you know how to take the test, that's half the battle. I can teach you that half, plus the other half. I can explain problems and methods for doing the problems that will make the SAT seem easy!

I played on the freshman team in 8th grade and I played four years of varsity soccer. I am also an avid soccer player and still play as a hobby.

Statistics as a topic isn't difficult. Statisticians view the world in a different way and think a different way than most. Once you know how to think in terms of stats, the material becomes a lot easier and a lot simpler. I plan on going to graduate school for Statistics, so I am well versed in the content. I also tutored this for 4 years in college. My experience with Statistics is immense, and I will use it to help you!

Study Skills

I took a study skills class while in high school, and I needed strong study skills throughout my four years of college. With a difficult and demanding major, I needed to know how to study correctly and efficiently. I needed to study for my major classes while also balancing my core subjects. Each class required a different method of studying, and I was able to accommodate each of those.

Having gone through the 12 years of basic school plus 4 years of college, I have written many papers. I have written creative pieces, informative pieces, and persuasive pieces. I know the differences between them, and I am able to differentiate the three papers for best results. I have also shown my skills to write by having senior research published, and I can provide various writing samples to show you how I write.

I believe that I can enhance your writing skills by showing you new techniques and avoiding common mistakes!
