Bradley University Peoria, Il (Business Management Economics)
I have a degree in Business Management and Economics from Bradley University. I taught math for about eight years to students from Sixth Grade through Algebra 1. I also tutored students from Third through Ninth grade on an individual basis. I place special emphasis on developing mental computational skills and logic/reasoning skills. For several years, I prepared and coached students for participation in the Mathcounts Middle School competition. I teach students shortcuts and tricks that make computation easier and fun. Additionally, I use puzzles, logic charts/tables to develop critical thinking and reasoning. It is also very important to help students to see math at work in the real world on a daily basis.
I am a former military officer with a broad base of experience that is applicable to success on the ASVAB or the AFQT. My classroom experience with students at a variety of levels in different subjects as well as my experience of guiding parents in working with their children has provided me with many insights that enable me to provide the assistance needed to be successful on this type of exam.
I taught Middle School American History for three years. I believe that is it important to make history come alive! That requires imagination, creativity and connection. To gain a true appreciation for history, a student must go beyond memorizing facts to getting understanding, and analyzing the impact of events from different perspectives. The real fun in learning history comes when you begin to think about how things would be different if certain events never happened or turned out another way!
It is always a good feeling to be part of a winning team! To win requires hard work and commitment from each team member. Each team member must know and perform their part and be able to support other team members as well.
That is the formula for success in education and in life. What is important is not where or how you start, but how you grow and progress throughout your lifetime! Let's get started! This was my son's second tutoring session with Carl. Prior to the first meeting, Carl called to get some background information regarding my son's needs and the issue he was having in Pre-Algebra. This also helped him prepare for the first session. After each session, he carefully takes his time to assess where my son is and a plan to get him to the next level. He is really caring and he invests his time understanding the system both on the private and public level. I recommend him wholeheartedly!
He is a great math teacher helps you learn different methods that aren't hard to catch on He is very patient & very hands on doesn't leave to much for you to do I would recommend him to someone else
My son feels very very comfortable working with Carl. He has been out of high school for a year and it seems like some basics have just been lost in math I am giving Carl 5 stars for his first tutoring session.
If my son can get a high score on his asvab in math reasoning then there is no question hands down Carl will have done his job.
We will see how far Carl and my son can get in the next month then I can really have an idea of a good rating. But like Carl said team work makes dreams work. So my son has to hold his end to.
Carl was patient with me and took the time to work things out in different ways for each math problem we solved so that I had a better understanding of how to work them out... he taught me a lot in a matter of only a few hours, and he also made sure I wasn't going home empty handed by giving me things to work on at home. I will continue to follow up with Carl and appreciate his time as my tutor. A big thanks to Carl and Wyzant for the connection, I appreciate everything! 5 stars!
I taught Algebra 1 to a mixed class of students (grades 7 - 10). I used cooperative learning strategies and video lessons to supplement the text. I have also tutored individual students in Algebra, Prealgebra and Elementary Math for several years. I sometimes have students reinforce what they have learned by teaching a lesson to their classmates.
I taught American History for two years to Seventh and Eighth grade students. I supplemented the text with videos, cooperative learning strategies and student developed presentations or portrayals. Occasionally, I brought in guest speakers to relate personal stories that connected to the curriculum material.
I taught Sixth Grade math for six years and have tutored individual students from Grades 3 through 8 for six or seven years. I have used flash cards, puzzles, math games, speed drills, logic tables/charts and competitive games over the years.
I am an avid reader and have spent quite some time writing proposals, editing newsletters, writing/editing speeches and developing various presentations. As a former history and science teacher, I routinely edited student essays and presentations. I have several resources that I can use to illustrate and reinforce the rules of grammar, parts of speech and to assist in developing writing style.
I spent several years editing middle and high school student essays and speeches for presentations in history, science fairs and oratorical contests, including for grammar. I also have assisted several adults in making presentations in classes for post graduate degrees as well as adults making presentations in the workplace. Additionally, I have made presentations for non-profit organizations and churches over the past several years.
I taught Prealgebra to Seventh and Eighth grade students for six years. I used a variety of techniques throughout the year such as speed drills for computational skill development, logic tables/charts to develop reasoning, group projects for practical application, and math-based tricks and shortcuts to maintain interest. I also prepared and coached teams of students to participate in the Mathcounts Middle School competitions for several years. This exposed students to more diverse applications of math and strenuous competition.
