About James

Arabic is a challenge, but so is anything that is rewarding. I've enjoyed every discovery and link I've made with the language, whether it be the more complicated grammar concepts from your standard textbooks to the differences in idioms between Levantine and Egyptian Arabic. I am a passionate and curious person, and am looking to share my knowledge with anyone interested in learning Arabic or brushing up on their fundamentals.

I have taught small classes and tutored on-on-one, both for English and Arabic. I love seeing students make the same connections I once made, and make sure I direct students not just to getting through textbook material, but practicing real-world applications and making cultural, historical, and etymological connections.

I lived in Jordan for three years after college, where I worked as a translator (Arabic-English) for a news website while also teaching English night classes. I also lead month-long courses in Jordan with an organization called Where There Be Dragons, which specializes in cross-cultural experiential education. Besides teaching about the history of the country, my favorite thing on those courses is teaching dialect to my students.

As a former student of Arabic myself (and in many ways you never stop learning), I have experienced firsthand many of the difficulties in learning the language, from broken plurals to agreement rules, to the difference between dialect and formal Arabic. I've also developed a cache of helpful songs and videos to make sure students are learning from authentic material!

I'm excited to chat with anyone who is curious about Arabic; it is such a rich language and allows so much important inter-cultural understanding! Contact me any time and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I have a bachelor's degree in Arabic from Tufts University, where due to progress I made studying abroad, I completed beyond the normal course of study, taking independent study courses my senior year.

After graduation I moved to Jordan where I worked for a study abroad company, where I would often contribute to students's classes, in addition to teaching English at night. Following this experience, I worked for a year as as a translator for a news website.

I also taught a month-long intensive summer course with an educational travel company, Where There Be Dragons. In this position I taught both complete beginners and novices both Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect.
