About Thomas

I am a well-educated professional, with experience teaching and tutoring children, teens, and adults in English, Literature, Math and the Sciences. In addition to helping homeschool my own four children, I have tutored at the high school, college and graduate level, and lectured at graduate-level courses since graduating law school in 1999. I am also a published author, and artist. Teaching and tutoring is an especially rewarding endeavor for me because it allows me to help students find their true potential. Rather than teach simply the facts, the rules, or the tricks to take a test, I believe critical thinking and the internalization of the substantive materials results in the most successful outcomes - in both the short and long terms. To witness a student's development and assist them in not only succeeding in achieving better results, but in actually understanding and applying core concepts makes me proud. Working with students and professionals of all ages has also revealed the joy in working one-on-one with individuals to overcome obstacles they once may have thought impossible to cross.

I hold a degree in English and a J.D., and write both for a living and creatively. I tutor and teach standardized test subjects and have practical and technical knowledge of English grammar and literary canon.

I read and write everyday and can help students understand grammar, literature, and how to convey their knowledge concisely and expertly in essays and other written product. I also have a strong math and science background (former member of the University of Michigan Honors College in Chemistry and Physics), and love to help students think critically about experimental science and to apply math to fundamental problems. Let me help you reach your best results!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I received a JD, manga cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1999 and successfully passed the Maryland and DC bar exams that same year. Since that time I have been a practicing attorney and have taught and tutored law school and bar exam classes. My bar exam tutoring experience includes teaching classes professionally and successfully tutoring individual students since 2007.

Law

I am a successfully practicing attorney and have extensive experience in criminal and civil law. I regularly tutor law and graduate students in a variety of subjects, including criminal law, civil procedure, evidence, and legal writing.

LSAT

I have successfully taught LSAT prep courses and tutored individual students for the past five years. Individualized instruction works best and permits the student to focus time and effort in ways that have the largest impact on their particular performance. However, generally, I focus on substantive understanding of each section first, and then efficiency and general test taking strategies.

SAT Writing

As an attorney, and English major, I write and edit professionally and on a daily basis. I have a wealth of education and experience in teaching, tutoring and publishing a variety of forms of written communication. I am very familiar with English grammar rules and standardized testing techniques regarding the same.
