About Justine

I have been an avid reader since before I started school, and I believe that my love of reading is what fuels my love of teaching. I enjoy watching students discover the world of literature and enjoying what they discover. I also enjoy helping students grasp concepts that may have been difficult to understand in a classroom setting; one-on-one tutoring supports classroom learning while providing students with the individual attention that they deserve.

Recently, I completed my bachelor's degree in English literature, as well as a 100 hour in-class teaching experience. I am working on getting certified in Maryland to teach English in grades 7-12. Prior to my college teaching experience, I was a peer tutor for my Algebra II class and led a study group in AP Psychology.

I chose to teach English because of my love for the subject. I also teach English because I believe many students approach the subject with negative ideas and opinions that can impede the learning process; these opinions can be changed with an a positive approach and finding the right reading material to match your student's interests. I strive to get to know your student in order to find the learning and teaching styles that work best for them, as well as to find out what their interests outside of English are so that I can incorporate them into our lessons as needed.

I have taken multiple classes on a variety of literature types, as well as a comprehensive class on traditional and modern grammar. Through that grammar class, I have compiled research on the importance of grammar in writing, and through that research have learned that constantly quizzing students on grammar rules is ineffective. Grammar is not strictly rules; it is a fluid system that changes with the writing style in which it is being used.

By adapting my teaching style to the students I work with individually I am better able to help students meet their individual goals. Hopefully, I will be able to work with you and your student to set and attain any goals within the English concentration.

I look forward to discussing future sessions with you through Wyzant and doing whatever I can to help your student learn!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
