About Zak

Through years of studying myself and helping others to learn, I have found that the ultimate test of understanding a subject is teaching it. The best way to teach a concept is to know it so thoroughly in and out that any of the myriad misunderstandings a student might have can be thwarted with a change in approach. A particular nuance of a subject that presents a problem for the student can be something the teacher had taken for granted and never closely examined their self. Thus, teaching gives the important opportunity to view a concept with the fresh perspective of the student, allowing both student and teacher to learn and grow. It is with this philosophy that I endeavor to help students achieve success with individually tailored lessons and, with the aid of an open mind, grow my own understanding.

With a degree in experimental physics, I am best able to help students wanting tutoring in physics or a variety of math subjects including calculus, trigonometry, geometry, and algebra up to high school and early college level. I can also help with other physical sciences (eg. chemistry, geology) up to the middle school level. I am familiar with the new Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core) and can help prepare students for the PARCC assessments, SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

Taking part in weekly tutoring sessions in college to help underclassmen has shown me that the main benefit of tutoring is the one-on-one relationship between student and tutor. This provides an excellent means to tackle the student's particular questions and concerns. As such, I prepare individual lesson plans for each student. Accordingly, a first meeting with a student will be a consultation to determine what areas they want to work on and how best they learn. Lessons following that will be designed for the student.

I am happy to meet with students wherever they feel most comfortable and productive, but I do request that the venue be in public. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
