Hi! My name is Karen, and I would love to help you or your child learn how to play the piano! Students that I teach range in age from six through ninety-four years old. Hi! My name is Karen, and I would love to help you or your child learn how to play the piano! Students that I teach range in age from six through ninety-four years old. I started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old and loved it so much that I continued studying music in college. I eventually returned to school to become a pharmacist, but music is my passion! The ability to sit at the piano and play classical music, pop music, or a simple improvisation is a gift which I hope every person can experience.
I have a Bachelor's of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Catholic University of America and a Master's of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Virginia Commonwealth University. I accompanied dance ballet classes for over ten years at the School of the Richmond Ballet and in Maryland and Northern Virginia. I teach from my home in Silver Spring, Maryland, travel to a few locations, and teach virtually via Zoom.
One of my favorite piano teachers with whom I had the good fortune to study from in college would emphasize the importance of playing with feeling and a beautiful sound. Another favorite piano teacher from college taught me how to analyze music in a way that made playing and listening to music more meaningful to me. I aim to bring these aspects to the teaching of my piano students. I have a selection of fun games, worksheets, and interactive online activities to make learning fun and effective for children and adults alike.
