About Miriam

Bio

I'm a Yale grad who lived in Israel for nearly 35 years and recently returned to the U.S. When I first arrived in Israel my Hebrew was basic, but within a relatively short time I achieved a high level and became a Hebrew-to-English translator. I've also studied French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Arabic, and Russian, so I understand the perspective of the language learner in general and of Hebrew learners in particular. I’ve tutored English to Israelis and Hebrew to Americans.

Because I lived in Israel for many years, I know Hebrew the way it is spoken by native-born Israelis. I take an individualized approach to teaching Hebrew. Every language learner’s goals are different and everyone has a different way of learning languages. First I find out your level, but also your goals in learning Hebrew. Then I fit the lessons to your needs. Do you want to be able to speak but don’t want a heavy emphasis on grammar? We’ll focus on conversation. Are you looking to be able to read scholarly articles? Our emphasis will be a good understanding of high-level vocabulary.

I offer the benefit of my own experience with Hebrew to those who want to reach a higher level. I work mainly with adults but am happy to tutor high school or college students.

Contact me and we'll work together to achieve your goals in the way that works best for you.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I'm a professional English editor, meaning that my job is to fix other people's English. I have taught English to non-native speakers.
Grammar,

Grammar

I'm a professional editor, writer, and translator. That means that I earn my living from my knowledge of grammar. In addition, because I've studied seven foreign languages, I know a lot about grammar that you rarely learn when you take English in school. I've tutored English to non-native speakers.
Hebrew,

Hebrew

For several decades I lived in Jerusalem and learned to speak, read, and write Hebrew. For much of that time I worked as a Hebrew-to-English translator. I translated books and articles for professors, think tanks, and other clients, on subjects ranging from Middle Eastern politics to Islamic law to archaeology to early childhood development. I know the way Israelis speak Hebrew, I know the grammar, and I know how to learn a foreign language.
Proofreading

Proofreading

For much of my career I've been an editor and proofreader. Proofreading requires a knowledge of rules and an eye for fine detail. Proofreading is giving a last once-over to material that is ready for publication, material that has already been edited and corrected after editing. At the proofreading stage, there should not be many errors left, and they should be minor errors. Because they are often so minor, they can be hard to find. That's why having an eye for detail or developing one is critical.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Almost everything I've done in my career involves words: writing, editing, proofreading, translating. Although I grew up in a home with a big emphasis on words and their origins, I have enriched my vocabulary in English by studying seven foreign languages--Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Hebrew, Arabic, and Russian. I have tutored English to non-native speakers and have experience explaining vocabulary words, prefixes, and other related words.

I am an English editor with years of experience in writing, editing, and proofreading English. I have high-level vocabulary and an excellent grasp of grammar. English is my native language, but it's far from the only one I know. I've studied seven foreign languages--Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Hebrew, Arabic, and Russian--and I lived in Israel for 30+ years and am a professional Hebrew-to-English translator. In short, languages are my professional specialty and also a subject that I love to learn and teach.

Writing

For almost my entire career I've worked with writing--as a writer, an editor, and a translator. My professional life revolves around knowing how to write and how not to. This means that I have not only a firm grasp of grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation, but also an understanding of what makes writing strong, what makes it weak, and how to transform bad or so-so writing into good writing.
