My name is Patty Holt, and I have been teaching 4th grade for five years in the Archdiocese of Washington. Prior to that, I taught Pre-K, 1st grade, and worked in Howard County with 7th/8th graders struggling with basic math concepts. My certification is through the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland. This is my second round of tutoring. I tutored 3rd-8th graders previously, but took a break from it when my own children were young.
Hands-on learning including manipulatives and games work best not only for students in the classroom, but those tutored individually. That is what I will use with your child. It has been my experience that introducing a difficult concept first with manipulatives and then transferring over to paper and pencil are very effective in learning. Students are able to connect the modeling to the algorithm more easily through this process. I am a strong proponent of reading aloud to children of all ages. It aids in fluency, word recognition and cognitive development.
I have taught many levels of math over the past twenty years, and have instructed students of all math abilities.
I believe that grammar is very important in the development of becoming a good writer.
My experience includes working with students from ages 4-14. I continue to take professional development classes, and attend seminars that improve my teaching skills. I believe that reading skills can be honed through other academic subject areas such as science and social studies.
I look forward to bringing my calm demeanor and wealth of teaching experience to assist your child in reaching their full potential in all academic areas. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
