I have a PhD from Indiana University and a Masters from American University of Beirut. I have studied in both the U.S. and Lebanon, and my experience with Arabic (translation, editing and teaching) spanned over 35 years in private and public sectors in Lebanon, Kuwait and the United States.
I have had the opportunity to tutor foreign non-Arabic-speaking students in both Lebanon and Kuwait prior to coming to the United States. Tutorship was done one-on-one and with a group of people, usually after class. Some of those students went to join the Foreign Service and be posted at U.S. embassies in Arab capitals. My tutorship included games and riddles. The tutees who had varying levels of knowledge of Arabic, including writing and reading, were of various nationalities. I did display patience, realizing that Arabic is a difficult language. I am able to tutor students in English from Arab backgrounds, some taking ESL courses.
Being a native speaker and of an Arab country, I received primary education in Arabic (being mandatory). I studied in both Lebanon and the U.S. with a 25-year language experience with the State Dept. in Washington. Prior to that I edited publications in both English and Arabic using both languages as a source.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
