About Pam

After I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, I moved to China where I taught ESL for two years, and taught an American high school English curriculum to students preparing to study at American universities. I am currently a writing tutor at the language center at George Washington University. Although I have worked mostly with ESL students, the focus was more on content and style than grammar, so many of the teaching materials I've developed will work with native speakers as well who want to improve their writing. I have worked mostly with high school students, but I have experience with students as young as 3.

I studied Chinese formally for four years, and then lived in China for four years. I am not a native-level speaker, but am more than capable of basic and intermediate level instruction.

Writing is my favorite, aside from reading. I have experience in teaching grammar, proofreading techniques, and style and content. I am also familiar with various styles, including creative fiction and nonfiction, as well as formal academic writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I majored in Chinese language and literature as an undergraduate at University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, I lived and worked in China for four years. Although I did not formally study the language while I was there, I used it daily when talking to Chinese friends and coworkers. I have not taken the HSK, but am approximately level 5, so I would be comfortable tutoring anyone from levels 1-4 in grammar and/or pronunciation.
