I currently teach English as a county contractor for a public school program in the DC Metro area. I am available to work with both children and adults who need tutoring in English. I can tutor children and adults who are learning English as a second language. I can also tutor native English speakers who want to improve their reading, writing and speaking skills for school, work, or social activities. My goal is to help my students become confident and proficient in their English usage.

Current Teaching Experience: I teach English as a Second Language to adult learners. In addition, I recently completed a year of tutoring an elementary school student in math and language arts (literature, reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, writing and handwriting) on a volunteer basis. I currently teach math and language arts to a middle-school aged student.

Past Teaching and Tutoring Experience/Credentials: I received my MBA from Columbia University with a concentration in finance. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University with a major in mathematics/computer science. I also hold a Certificate in Spanish from New York University's School of Continuing Education. I now incorporate those teaching strategies which were most helpful to me as a learner of Spanish as a second language into my current work as an ESOL instructor.

I've tutored children in math at the elementary school level on a volunteer basis. I have been professionally engaged to conduct math SAT preparation workshops for high school students. As an adjunct professor, I taught corporate finance (a subject which incorporates algebra, probability and statistics, and other math topics) to adults at Strayer University. In my prior work as a financial analyst, I developed a self-instructional book on corporate finance topics. I also created and taught a credit policy training workshop to corporate employees.

Experience with Students Who Learn Differently: As a volunteer, I provided one-on-one English literacy support to an adult with dyslexia for several years. I also served as a volunteer reader for the Metropolitan Washington Ear, a non-profit organization which makes printed material accessible to the blind, the dyslexic and others who can't read it due to disability.

Over the years, I've taught multi-age, multi-level groups of children and adults in Bible study, Sunday school and children's worship services. Often the children's groups have included at least one student with special needs for whom I used an approach of full inclusion. As a result, I've learned that many of the best practices for enabling a student with special needs to learn in an inclusive setting (multi-sensory instruction, small class sizes, movement, singing, etc.) can also optimize the acquisition and enjoyment of learning for the "neurotypical" student.

Tutoring Approach - Teach to the Student's Own Learning Style: I've learned that each student needs to receive instruction in the way that best connects to his or her unique learning style and types of intelligence. So as a tutor, I look for ways to help students understand how the academic subject matter relates to their everyday lives and personal interests so that they will be motivated to learn. I routinely use a variety of instructional methods which will help visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic learners to actively engage the subject matter which is being taught, and stay motivated to work through the material which they find to be most challenging. I also seek to understand each student's unique combination of intelligences (areas of greatest competency and self-motivated learning), and leverage these competencies to strengthen the student's areas of greatest academic challenge.
