About Sharon

I have 20 years experience teaching graduate student/reporters in the Washington program of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism how to cover national politics.

I am a voracious reader of books, magazines, newspapers, web sites and just about any written format. Good writing tells a story with a beginning, middle and an end. The writer takes the reader on a journey.

History covers more than dates and places. Social change occurs in context with events. I have 15 years experience teaching graduate school seminars that brought context to government policy.

If you are looking for someone to help you organize your writing style into something that sounds exactly like what you are trying to say, perhaps you should give me a call.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I was a television news writer/producer for more than a dozen years at TV stations in Iowa, Ohio, New York and Washington, DC. I wrote copy for "America's Most Wanted" in its first season that helped the FBI cracked the oldest most wanted case in its files.

I taught in the Washington graduate program of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism for nearly 20 years. My student/reporters covered national issues for local radio and TV stations in Red states and Blue states around the country.

Many students won awards. One class won the National prize for In-Depth television news reporting for a half-hour video we produced about the military in the run-up to the war in Iraq.

Political Science

I have 20 years experience as a member of the Washington, DC faculty in Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism graduate school newsroom. Our student/reporters covered politics with credentials from the Senate and House and Radio-TV News Galleries for broadcast stations in Red states and Blues states around the country.

I understand how politics is supposed to work and I see how many of today's young people are totally turned off by the process. But I believe they have the power to change it.
