About Kim

I have worked as a substitute, paraeducator and teacher for more than twenty years. In the 1990's, I held a California credential for teaching elementary school general education. I volunteered and substituted while raising my kids during the 2000's and have spent much of this decade earning my Master's Degree in Special Education from Towson University
The thing I love the best about teaching is that shared pride and joy when the student feels successful. I am good at getting to know my students as learners and as kids. I am their cheerleader as they work to understand or finish an assignment. I love creating just the right materials to make lessons entertaining enough for understanding to slip in and stay put. What keeps me coming back and back to teaching, are the moments when I get to see that proud little smile and hear, "I get it!".

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have held a California teaching credential and will soon have my MD teaching credential for Elementary school. I have worked for the public school system in MD for more than 10 years.

Elementary Math

I worked this year in an elementary school, supporting students who needed extra help. My students and coworkers supported my belief that I am able to help kids "get" math concepts. I am willing and able to try multiple means of explaining how and why until we find a method that makes sense to the student.

Reading

As part of the preparation for my Master's Degree in Special Education, I have taken Maryland's four required reading courses ( Methods of teaching Reading, Reading Assessment, Materials and Literacy ). I have taken an additional course through Johns Hopkins University on teaching reading to students with disabilities. Last (and least) I studied the whole language method of teaching reading while earning a California Clear Multiple Subject (elementary general education) Teaching Credential in the 1990's. I work for MCPS with students every day who struggle with reading.

Special Needs

Knowledge: I have nearly completed coursework for a Masters Degree in special education. I have taken and passed the Praxis II for special Ed. I have worked as a special Ed Paraeducator for 10 years.

My experience is mostly with school community based students and some autism classrooms.
