About James

My love of mathematics and teaching began during my high school days when I led classroom workshops in Algebra and and Geometry and tutored my peers. After receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics, I joined a major tech company, where I used math in performing my job responsibilities as a Systems Engineer.
As my career progressed, I taught data communications concepts to customers. Later, I managed the curriculum content and education delivery of a segment of my company's sales and computer systems new hires training.
As a manager, I coached and developed my teams to meet our business objectives, again demonstrating the capability to develop and transfer skills.

I look forward to working with you to become proficient in mathematics. I will make an assessment of your current proficiency level and develop custom training modules to address your opportunity areas.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I retired as a controller from a major sales operations for the last 22 years. As the controller, I was responsible for meeting profit objectives for a sales office responsible for $100+M annually in profit from new sales and post sales revenue.

As the controller, I managed product pricing to ensure profitable sales, accounts receivables to ensure controlled receivables levels, and elements of sales expenses to maintain profitable margins. Performing my responsibilities required detailed understanding of accounting principles which I will share my students.

Algebra 1

I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I worked in business as a Financial Controller for 22 years in which I used math daily to perform my duties. For the last three years I have successfully tutored math for students in Junior High School through Senior High helping them to improve from failing grades to excellent grades.

Algebra 2

I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I worked in business as a Financial Controller for 22 years in which I used math daily to perform my duties. For the last three years I have successfully tutored math for students up to Senior High where Algebra 2 is generally studied. My tutoring experience has shown me that the root causes of the difficulties that Algebra 2 students have with the subject are skill gaps concerning topics that were not fully mastered in Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. After assessing these skill gaps, I develop lesson plans tailored to address the past gaps while concurrently assisting with the more advanced topics.

GED

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and 44 years of professional experience in positions that required the use of mathematics to be successful. For the last three years, I have been tutoring math for students in Junior to Senior High and have developed an approach that engages my students and have been successful in helping them learn their math subjects, develop their analytical skills, and increase their confidence in their ability to be successful in math.
In working with students who are studying for the GED certificate, I will assess their current skill level and tailor lesson plans to address their requirements.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using spreadsheets and relational databases for more than 30 years in the daily execution of my job responsibilities. I use the primary applications of the Microsoft Office Suit of Applications, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and know the procedures to link data amongst the applications.

Prealgebra

I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and worked in business for a total of 44 years in positions that required strong mathematical skills to be successful. I have tutored students in Junior and Senior High School for the last three years. My tutoring experience has shown me the criticality of students getting a sound math foundation at the pre-algebra level in order for them to do well in more advanced math topics. Because of this critical need, I focus my lesson plans on providing the math basics that the current math curriculum in many schools have eliminated.
