My name is Oluwakemi J. I am an educator with over 16 years experience at kindergarten to middle school levels, teaching the four core subjects. I have also taught adult learners of English Language Basic English Grammar and Conversational skills.
My first classroom teaching experience was as an assistant teacher at a private school in Takoma Park, Maryland, USA, where I worked for three years. I also taught at various schools in the Maryland area before traveling to the United Arab Emirates with my family.
I taught Language Arts and Science for 6.5 years at the first, fourth, and sixth grade levels at an English school in the United Arab Emirates. I particularly enjoyed working with the ESL students, and careful preparation of lessons allowed me to break down sometimes complicated concepts to simple examples that my young students could grasp easily. I have used the handwriting grid to improve some of my students’ handwriting, which was an issue stemming from discrepancies between Arabic and English alphabet, and right to left as opposed to left to right writing techniques in English.
I also taught English abroad to adult learners of English. Managing students with different abilities in English proved to be a challenging but satisfying, experience as I tailored activities to maintain the interest of high-level students without intimidating less-skilled English speakers.
I enjoy reading aloud to my students as this encourages them to be curious about chapter books, and wanting to complete the story. They are also enthusiastic about writing about the characters, and illustrating their perceptions of events, and expressing their thoughts on each story. I have successfully used reading to build interest in writing amongst my students.
I believe my experience teaching adults and ESL students is advantageous to any position in the Education field. My name is Oluwakemi J. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
