I completed the Montgomery College Associate of Arts in Teaching with honors 3 years ago and went on to complete one year at Towson University in an education program. While at Towson, I realized that I am much better in individual or small group settings rather than classroom settings. I have tutored on a volunteer basis for almost 20 years. I love understanding how children think and guiding them to understand why their ideas are not working. I emphasize a feeling of success, a "can do" attitude, no matter how difficult a student might find something. I believe all children can learn what they need to in order to succeed and thrive.
When working with any grade or age student, I have an overall sense of how to explain concepts with respect to a student's understanding and I have a drive to make concepts as transparent as possible through comparisons of what students' areas of difficulty with more successful methods of solving, writing, and/or understanding a concept, problem, or other project that we are addressing at any given time.
Due to my physical disability (I use a walker), I am not able to access every home with steps (I need two handrails and someone who can carry my walker up and down steps for me), but I will do my best to get into most residences. I use paratransit (MetroAccess) and will be at every tutoring appointment either early or on time, depending on my ride. I am flexible with times and meeting places.
I look forward to meeting you and your students! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
