About Matthew

I scored 172 on the Praxis II English to Speakers of Other Languages (5361) when the required score in Maryland is 149. I hold the CELTA, Cambridge University's certificate for teaching ESL to adults, in addition to a BA and MA degrees, and over 50 credits towards a second master's degree. My education and training was in language instruction, translating, interpreting, and communicating texts in writing and speech, publicly and privately. I have applied my training by teaching English in the United States and South Korea for approximately nine years.

About a century ago the majority of my relatives spoke English as a second language. Immigrating from Europe they spoke Norwegian, French, Swedish, and German as first languages. At the time 90% of American citizens were originally from Europe. However, two American presidents, Roosevelt and Wilson, encouraged everyone to speak English as their main language; they also wanted everyone to cut off their various heritages in order to unite the country. German American or European American was set aside for "American."

A hundred years later, multiculturalism is encouraged in the US. Speaking only one language is frowned upon, and even mocked by countries abroad. However, understanding and using English is still vital for citizenship, academics, business, and science locally and globally. I am an English Language Arts (ELA) and English Language Learner (ELL) teacher who wants to help you improve your language skills for social integration as well as professional development. I am sympathetic to students and clients making the same transition my ancestors made. Furthermore, I even have relatives today who are in the same situation, such as my mother-in-law who speaks Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese as her first languages. I know where you are coming from and have the education, training, and experience to make you a success.

*I was born in Washington, D.C. and have spent many years abroad in South Korea, Germany, Mexico, and Spain. My students have spanned 32 countries: Ethiopia, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Palestine, Syria, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, France, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Columbia, Brazil, Ukraine, Russia, India, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Mongolia. Lastly, I have visited 24 countries: Norway, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, Jamaica, Haiti, and South Korea.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

1. CELTA: Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, 160 hours, Cambridge accredited.

2. 7 years teaching and tutoring ESL in South Korea and the US to all age groups -- preschool to working professionals.

IELTS

An IELTS student recently hired me to teach her English. As a result I did research for the IELTS test, buying textbooks and watching video lessons on the subject. My review of the material made me conclude that it is like the TOEFL test which I have taught for over a year. I believe I am capable of tutoring this test as well.

Psychology

I have a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling and Discipleship. This course was accredited, providing a foundation for those who wish to take an additional two semesters and the state test for licensure as an LPC. Both theoretical and practical classes were taken, such as a substance abuse and the history of soul care, as well as labs where I was required to perform the role of a counselor in a simulated situation observed by both my professor and fellow classmates.

Reading

1. I have a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling and Discipleship.

TOEFL

1. Tutoring TOEFL for a year in the Washington DC area using ETS' The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test and Bruce Sterling's Scoring Strategies for the TOEFL iBT.

*I can meet you in your home or office, as well as the public library, but I recommend we eventually study at a coffee shop in order to familiarize yourself with the TOEFL test environment -- many people talking at the same time.

The best tutor — With his assistance and teaching technique I got 103 in TOEFL, just what I want to get. He is really great in teaching TOEFL and he took the time to teach me what I need to be improved in my English. I've been able to see my progress with him through my TOEFL scores. He's been very helpful for me, without his excellency in teaching TOEFL wouldn't have made it. Big Thanks to Matthew L. ...
