About Joy

Is your child struggling with reading or writing? Need QuickBooks or computer technology in general to keep your business going? Do you need a resume written or proofreading for a paper? With a background that includes teaching and high academic achievement, small business management, professional writing and public speaking, I offer tutoring and consulting services in English Language Arts, QuickBooks, digital literacy (general computer) and educational/life coaching (confidence building, study skills, and more).

I have 15 years of professional experience in business and human services and hold a master's degree from a Columbia University-affiliated institution where I completed coursework in multicultural education. I earned a B.A. with honors in communications management from Howard University where I earned a 4.0 G.P.A. in English. Based on my academic achievement, service leadership and ability to write a compelling application about both, I earned a full, merit-based scholarship to graduate school as well as a $5,000 fellowship.

Working with both children and adults, I address not just the subject matter, but confidence, study skills and overall life context as it relates to learning. Along with leading scholars, I understand that effective teaching requires an understanding of a learner's context and I bring this holistic perspective to my tutoring. With compassion and encouragement, I have been effective in helping adults who, despite academic credentials, may need to fill in some educational gaps and enjoy being a role model for students who need to build confidence and motivation. Below are the subjects in which I tutor and my qualifications.

QUICKBOOKS/BUSINESS/DIGITAL LITERACY (GENERAL COMPUTER)

For over six years, I've consulted with and provided training for small business owners and organizations as well as individuals (mostly older adults) who need to expand their IT skills and general computer/digital literacy. Although I'm tech-savvy, I'm able to explain technology to beginning learners who may have little to no experience. I can assist in areas such as organizing finances/bookkeeping in QuickBooks; learning general computer and internet/online navigation skills; launching and managing email campaigns; learning to use social media and internet navigation; and setting up LANS (local area networks)--a set-up where multiple devices such as a desktop computer, printer, with and a tablet communicate with each other. With a B.A. in communications management and more than a decade working in corporate, small business and nonprofit settings, I have advanced proficiency in more than 30 different applications including QuickBooks, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, SurveyMonkey, Google apps, Adobe Reader, Zoho CRM, Constant Contact, and other CRM databases.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND ADULT LITERACY

The daughter of an English teacher, I'm a native English speaker with expertise in working with speakers of English as a second language and AAVE (African American Vernacular English). I assist with reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary and other aspects of English Language Arts. I also offer proofreading and specialized writing services for resume writing, business writing, and college essay writing.

Just before graduate school, I spent a year teaching 3rd grade in Montgomery County Public Schools where I received in-service training and conducted reading assessments. I engage the Common Core standards that guide all curriculum in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia as well as Maryland's broader College and Career-Ready framework. As a long-term substitute, I also taught middle school English Language Arts where I worked with students on types of sentences, parts of speech, punctuation, narrative writing, remedial phonics and much more. Working with children and adults, I've tutored or provided instruction for over 10 years, including 5 years tutoring K-6 students in Washington, DC public schools in English and other subjects.

EDUCATIONAL/LIFE COACHING: study skills, time management, confidence building and more

For more than a decade I worked in faith-based settings helping people to discover their purpose and live fully empowered lives. This included two years as a higher education chaplain where I worked with a lot of first-generation college students who needed to build their confidence, sometimes strengthen skill sets and generally learn how to navigate the higher education process in order to graduate and succeed. Upon request, I can incorporate spiritual resources such as meditation and deep breathing as they have been shown to improve focus, confidence, retention and more.

MY POLICIES

1. CANCELLATION POLICY: I require a 24-hour advance notice for any cancellation or late arrival, but do offer one "grace" cancellation or late arrival with shorter notice due to unforeseen emergencies (e.g., illness or child care issues). Any additional cancellations or late arrivals without the required notice will be billed the full amount of the scheduled lesson time. Please note that you are responsible for reading messages about lesson details.

2. SCHEDULING: If we establish a schedule that ends up not working for you, just let me know and I'm happy to try to work out a new schedule. NOTE: In general, acquiring and retaining (remembering) any new skill or knowledge requires repetition at a certain frequency over time. So, to get the most out of your time and money, I recommend that you stick to a schedule as much as possible.

3. LOCATION: I offer home-based tutoring on a limited basis and only after initially meeting in a public location. For all home-based tutoring of minors, an adult (at least 18 years old) is required to be home. If you or someone in your home smokes, we will need to meet at a public location. If you need to change locations, I'll try to accommodate you, but the change needs to be mutually agreed to in advance.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I offer comprehensive English Language Arts tutoring for children and adults. Please see my subject specific profiles for more details on spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and other aspects of reading and writing proficiency.

Along with leading scholars, I understand that effective teaching requires an understanding of a learner's cultural context and I bring this holistic perspective to my tutoring. With a commitment to eliminating educational achievement gaps, I've been effective helping adults who, despite academic credentials, may need to fill in some educational gaps and enjoy being a role model for girls and students of colors who need to build confidence and motivation. If requested, I also offer spiritual resources such as prayer and meditation as they have been shown to improve focus, confidence, retention and more.

General Computer

With a B.A. in communications management and more than a decade in corporate, small business and nonprofit settings, I have advanced proficiency in more than 30 different applications. Although I’m tech-savvy, I’m able to communicate and teach beginning users on everything from how to turn on a computer and use a mouse to syncing devices and setting up a LAN. I consult with and provide training for home-based and small business owners or anyone who needs to expand their IT skills and general computer/digital literacy. Below are some of the ways I can help you:

Organizing finances/bookkeeping in QuickBooks
Learning general computer and internet/online navigation skills
Launching and managing email campaigns
Learning to use social media and writing social media profiles
Setting up LANS (local area networks)

Microsoft Outlook

Based on more than 15 years as a small business user and then trainer, I offer beginner to advanced instruction in each of Outlook's four features--email, calendar, contacts and task management. This includes setting up external email accounts so that they can be managed from within Outlook; creating email signatures and templates; demonstrating how to create calendar appointments, recurring events and reminders; creating and customizing task lists and connecting them to contacts and the calendar; integrating contact management with all of Outlook's features and social media accounts; and importing, exporting and backing up data.

In addition to application training, I can offer insights such as whether you would benefit more from a retail or online version and also point out some of the bugs/shortcomings for a particular version (e.g., Outlook 2013 vs. 2016 and desktop vs. the Office 365 version) so that you can know that it's not just you!

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a presentation application that can be used to make everything from business reports to cookbooks and photo albums to interactive workshop presentations. As a PowerPoint user since the 1990s, I've created strategic plans, academic project reports, nonprofit presentations, a recipe book, and so much more. I now offer instruction for beginning to advanced users in multiple Windows versions. This includes general navigation and slide creation, master slide set-up, animation sequencing and slide transitions, and multimedia insertions. I also offer training on saving presentations for online sharing (without loss of formatting), text highlighting and some other features in PowerPoint 2016 that are only available for Microsoft Office 365 subscribers. At a different hourly rate or flat fee to be determined, I can also create custom presentations and templates. NOTE: To use this application efficiently, I strongly recommend that you have a mouse to use with your computing device.

QuickBooks

I hold a BA in management and have used QuickBooks as a consultant and small business owner for more than 15 years. Working with both small businesses and nonprofits, this has included invoicing (accounts receivables), bill pay (accounts payable), reconciliations, tax forms, reports and more. While I'm tech-savvy, I have trained people with limited computer experience to use QuickBooks effectively for their needs and would be glad to help you understand whichever version you have--desktop or online, 2016 or earlier.

Reading

In our first tutoring session, I conduct a brief assessment and, including whatever you (or your child) have shared, create a customized goal-based tutoring program. I’m genuinely here to serve, so a tutoring program is one way I help us to measure progress so your money is not wasted. For elementary students or others still acquiring foundational reading skills, I employ phonics within a whole system approach. As a native English speaker, I’ve also worked with students for whom English is a second language (ESL) as well as speakers of vernacular English to improve skills such as pronunciation, sight reading and rule memorization. In addition to the direct tutoring session with me, I can also provide online and other resources that can be accessed even after our sessions end.

Study Skills

The term "study skills" is shorthand for a range of skills and habits needed in academic, work and daily life. Whether preparing for a test or a job interview, memorizing vocabulary for a new language or writing a research paper, the act of learning requires the ability to find/research, comprehend, memorize, apply and otherwise engage information, often within a limited time period. Drawing on more than 15 years in business, education, and faith-based human services, I work with both children and adults to develop, integrate, and refine these skills while focusing on the habits and mindset that are also required. This includes developing skills in managing time, organizing materials and information, and exercises to increase calmness and focus.

Despite technological "time-savers" everywhere, organization remains a frequent challenge. Many students and persons in the workforce find that they are spending long hours trying to digest, memorize and otherwise "learn". Using a holistic, "inside out" approach, I work with clients to address both the internal environment of mindset, attitude, motivation, and focus, as well as the external environment of study space, data organization, and tools (highlighter, flash cards, etc.).

Additionally, because of the central role that literacy plays in understanding directions, for example, or being able to synthesize large amounts of information for a test, I often include instruction in reading comprehension and writing as they relate to studying and test preparation.

Finally, we know that when it is difficult to still and calm the mind, it difficult to concentrate. A student who finds it difficult to concentrate finds it difficult to absorb, synthesize, retain, recall and ultimately to learn. Upon request and at an additional hourly rate, I can help develop a plan to address the many factors that are often involved on the road to success.

Writing

As a communications professional, I have provided writing services to national nonprofits, businesses and individuals from basic proofreading to writing résumés and online profiles/bios. Based on the strength of my written application essay, I earned a full, merit-based scholarship for graduate school and a $5,000 professional fellowship. I help students learn and strengthen core competencies from parts of speech and sentence types to the advanced mechanics of narrative, expository and instructional writing. I also offer professional writing services that include writing résumés and bios/profiles, creating presentations/business reports and proofreading. Please contact me for pricing as the rates for these services vary.
