Writing can be a very difficult skill to master. There are so many rules, and yet it is often said that one learns the rules simply so that they can be broken in precise ways. Nothing is set in stone, nothing is final. There is a way to learn how to write that comes from formula and strategy that begins with a plan and does not result in stalemate, where the writer freezes up and the process grinds to a halt. One can learn how to identify a natural train of thought on a subject and get it onto paper in an engaging, unpretentious way.
I have worked a variety of different teaching jobs. I volunteered as a fencing tutor in high school, I have coached people in triathlon training, and I have worked, in grad school, with students individually on their papers and test preparation. I have experience publishing and doing editing work for bestselling nonfiction author Charles C. Mann. I have also led informal writing workshops where peers would evaluate each other's work, provide line-edits, and give overall feedback.
I moved to Los Angeles to further my other passion, music. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
