I am primarily a math tutor, helping students through Algebra 1 to grasp concepts that they have missed due to poor teaching or gaps in their education. I have worked with many adults preparing them for the math sections of the GED, Praxis, and the ASVAB. In addition, I have worked with many younger students who are struggling with prealgebra and algebra.
I fundamentally believe that one of the most important aspects of teaching is to help each individual student learn the best way that they learn new material and new skills. I have also tutored students with learning disabilities through the Lab School of Washington and at the Devereux Center for Head Injury Victims. I have numerous instructional materials which make the learning more accessible and fun for students. Shannon has been a great tutor helping me prepare to take a college entrance exam. She will make sure I have mastered a concept before moving on and she is very patient. Shannon has been very flexible with her scheduling to accommodate my work schedule. I would recommend her to anyone but I think she is especially helpful with adults who are trying to go back to school.
I am preparing for the Praxis I, Shannon has been working to help me review the math concepts. It has been helping me to become more comfortable. I always struggle with math and she has been patient with me while I hit mental blocks. Shannon has also made her schedule flexible so that I have been able to meet her at times that work for my schedule.
I never taught that I would have great admiration for my daughter's tutor ,but I do Shannon is wonderful with my daughter in every way. Dakota is so excited to go to the library for 45 mins every week. Shannon is very patient and fun to work with ,she makes it enjoyable for both of us .Dakota learned to read her first book after a week of tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored and read to students at my children's elementary school for the last three years. Last year I read to third and fourth graders 3 times a week during their lunch hour, helping them with vocabulary and teaching them about Greek Mythology. In addition, I worked one-on-one or in small groups with several children with ADD and others with ADHD. Before my children were born, I also tutored for the Lab School of Washington and worked with several children with ADD or ADHD. I am currently reading to third and fourth graders 3 times a week, as I did last year (several of these children have ADD) and am also tutoring 1st graders with learning difficulties including ADD in basic reading.
I have tutored several Algebra students over the last year that I have been working with WyzAnt. Some of these students have been adults who are retaking algebra in college, because they did not completely understand the material as it was presented in high school. In addition I have tutored 3 high school students in this subject area. I have Algebra specific learning materials which many students find make the make subject more accessible and fun to learn.
I have helped prepare numerous students for the Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge sections of the ASVAB. One student worked with me three hours a week for 6 weeks and his score on the Arithmetic reasoning section went from 65 to consistently scoring above 90. I have also worked with many adults preparing for math standardized exams similar to the ASVAB.
I have volunteered at my children's school for the last 4 years. I have worked with students from Kindergarten through 4th grade at my children's school. I am currently reading to 3rd grade students during their lunch times 4 times a week and 4th grade students twice a week. All of the students I read to at lunch choose to listen me read and talk to them about the stories and the information covered in the books I read instead of sitting in the cafeteria and conversing with their friends. I tutored one girl through WyzAnt for about 9 months when she was in preK and Kindergarten. The daughter of the mother who wrote the testimonial below has been working with on a weekly basis for over a year. She is now in the last few months of first grade.
I have tutored math extensively as a volunteer at my children's elementary school. In addition, I have helped many adults prepare for standardized exams in math where they need a complete review of elementary math including, but not limited to fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, and measurement units. I have also been working with a girl who is currently in first grade on both reading and math for over a year.
I have tutored numerous students preparing for the math section of the GED. In addition, I volunteered with a program assisting young parents getting their GED and helped them with all the subject areas. I am currently tutoring 4 adults all preparing for a variety of math standardized tests, including the GED and the PRAXIS (the basic math exam students must pass before becoming teachers, which is very similar to the GED).
I took the Praxis years ago and did very well, but I do not have a current record of my exact scores. I am familiar with all aspects of the Praxis and can especially help students with the math and English portions of the exam. I have tutored adults in these areas extensively and feel comfortable with the material .
I have worked with numerous students covering the material in PreAlgebra classes. I am currently working with a student who has gone from a failing grade to his mother reporting that he is doing quite well after only tutoring with me for a few months. I also have specific learning materials that make this subject more accessible and fun for most students. My own daughter is also currently taking pre-algebra.
