About Angela

I am currently a MD State certified Spanish and ESOL teacher working in PG County, but I have taught Spanish and English all over the WORLD - from Thailand to Guatemala (and a few other countries in between). I LOVE to learn and after a few classes with me, you will too! I finished 2 Bachelor's degrees (one in Spanish and the other in Teaching English as a Second Language) in just TWO AND A HALF YEARS (with Honors). I have taught all ages from Pre-School through adults, and I am eager to work with children from all ages and nationalities. We learn best by enjoying what we learn. In regards to languages, the best way to learn a language is through complete immersion - by listening and watching and moving and playing. In regards to music, I have been playing piano and singing for over 15 years and am going to get my Master's in music and second language acquisition. I am excited to learn with you and from you! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a teacher, I work with more and more students each year that have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I am familiar with the kinds of accommodations that they require in addition to the most effective teaching strategies that will help students with ADD/ADHD become the best that they can be!

On a personal note, my younger brother and several of my nephews have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, so I have been "teaching" children with ADD/ADHD ever since I was a child myself.

With patience and dedication, I have seen how a child with ADD/ADHD can fulfill their maximum potential and even surpass the skills of their peers.

Bible Studies

In 2009, I received two Bachelor's degrees from Liberty University (a Christian University in VA), but I have been a Bible scholar for many years. I have attended online-seminaries and currently make a daily practice of not just reading the Bible, but truly studying it.

College Counseling

As a high school teacher, one of my greatest pleasures was being able to counsel students on their college and career goals and choices. There are many factors to consider in regards to college, and I am here to help you make the best choice possible!

Dyslexia

Over the years as a teacher, I have worked with several students with Dyslexia. I have finally found a program that WORKS! By teaching reading and phonics through keyboarding, people with dyslexia are able to make new connections in their brains between letters, sounds, and words. In this way, students with dyslexia are engaged in Audio, Visual, Kinesthetic and Oral learning and engaging multiple areas of the brain for optimal learning.

Whether you are 5 years old or 50, it is never too late to develop reading and phonics skills through typing! Coupled with a research-based reading program, I have the recipe for success!

On a personal note, my nephew was diagnosed with dyslexia a few years ago, so I have had the pleasure and the privilege of working closely with him, and he is now reading above grade level!

Elementary (K-6th)

While I was a high school student, I was a part of my high school's Child Development program where I was the main teacher at a preschool. I also volunteered as a teacher's assistant for grades 3-8 until I graduated from high school.

While in college, I taught 1st through 4th grade in other countries like Guatemala and Thailand.

Now, I am currently teaching 5th and 6th Grade ESOL students in a PG County Elementary school. However, I teach all levels from Pre-K through college.

ESL/ESOL

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, as well as, a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language, with a minor in linguistics from Liberty University in just two and a half years. I am a Maryland Certified ESL Teacher, and I am currently teaching ESOL full-time in PG County.

Si sabe espaƱol y quiere aprender ingles, yo puedo ayudarle!

I have taught ESL in several countries all over the world from Guatemala to Thailand, from Israel to Germany and more! E-mail me today!

Logic

I went to the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) in order to study Logic at St. Mary's College when I was in 8th grade all through high school. I continued to study Logic in various courses throughout college.

Phonics

As an ESOL Teacher, I have been specially trained in Phonics and Linguistics. A solid phonics program is the basis to a successful literacy program, and you are never too old or too young to begin practicing phonics!

Piano

I have been playing piano since I was 5 years old, and I have been teaching piano privately for almost 10 years! While learning the piano requires a great amount of personal discipline, it also is a lot of fun!

Public Speaking

As a teacher, public speaking is a part of the job description! Public speaking entails that the speaker must take on many roles - an actress, a motivationalist, an authoritarian, a professional, a counselor, a professor, etc.

I used to be afraid of public speaking, but after taking several courses on the subject in college, I now find myself publicly speaking on the stage of our classrooms every day!

I can teach you the techniques and strategies that you will need to not only prepare a powerful speech off-stage, but also how to deliver a powerful speech on-stage.

Religion

I am a Christian (attending a non-denominational church but ascribing to Reformed Doctrine and Theology); however, I have studied all of the major world religions in depth: Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, etc.

I have also traveled countries like Israel and Thailand where other religions take great precedence in the lives of the people who reside there. I would love to teach and learn about religion with you because what we believe makes us who we are.

Softball

I have been playing softball since I was 4 years old. I have played every position on the field during game time, but my main positions are Pitcher and 1st Base. The first game that I started as pitcher in high school, I pitched a shut out! I also played in college and continue to play recreationally. I am now the softball coach at a PG County High School, but my passion is especially for teaching pitchers.

Songwriting

When poetry meets music, some spectacular is born!

I am pursuing a master's in music and have personally been writing songs since I was in elementary school. As an adult, I have attended workshops and have worked with people on singing/songwriting for years.

I can help you in selecting the most precise words for your lyrics while incorporating the perfect instrumental sound to accompany. My instrument of choice is the piano, but we can create meaningful music together of any genre on any instrument and bring your lyrics to life!

Spanish

I am a MD State Certified Spanish teacher with a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish. Although my family is American, I grew up with a Spanish-speaking nanny, so I am fluent and literate in both languages. I have taught Spanish at the high school level in PG County (using the Realidades curriculum), and I even started a non-profit organization that takes yearly trips to Guatemala in order to learn the Spanish language while serving in some of the poorest places in the world!

Special Needs

As an ESOL teacher, one of the greatest challenges is working with students who are not only having language difficulties but learning difficulties. Many of my ESOL students have IEPs so I work closely with the Special Ed teacher on a daily basis.

I also plan on adding an additional Special Education Certification on to my Maryland State Highly Qualified Advanced Professional Teacher's License.

Students with special needs require someone who has a great deal of patience and heart full of genuine love and care for the individual. It is one of my highest joys to be able to work with students who often many teachers have given up on, and inspire them to fulfill their dreams!
