About Ruth

LANGUAGE - English, French, Russian, Spanish

I have always been interested in languages and culture and have studied French, Spanish, and Russian in University. I also had the opportunity to live abroad (France, Argentina, Russia) for periods ranging from 4 months to several years and study the languages more in depth. My levels are as follow: English - Native, French - Advanced, Russian - Intermediate, Spanish - Intermediate. I can help students with grammar, pronunciation, speaking, and reading.

I have also worked since 2008 as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instructor with students of all ages (3-75). Some of this teaching has been in special English learning centers, some in foreign based schools, and some as private lessons. I offer lesson in person and online.

I tailor my methods to the student and what they want to work on. In any language learning process, I highly value communication. Therefore, speaking always plays a large role as it is most often the most difficult aspect for many students in learning a new language. Learning language is very natural and I try to imitate how a child learns their maternal tongue by doing lots of listening and speaking exercises. I also include grammar and reading for those who already have a sufficient understanding of how language works (a.k.a, not for young children).

I am able to help young learners read music, pronounce foreign languages, sing, and learn piano.

I studied vocal performance, both as a soloist and in ensembles or choirs, for several years, starting in middle school and continuing with a concentration in music in University. I have competed and placed in various competitions. I have studied piano on and off since I was a child and would enjoy the opportunity of sharing the joy with those interested. I am only comfortable teaching beginners.

I only offer music lessons in person.

I have had the opportunity to perform in many theatrical shows over the years. Many of these were during middle and high school as well as community theater and in University. These productions have ranged from children's theater to musicals to operas. In addition to performing on stage, I've also done voice recordings for radio shows and audio guides. Playing a role on stage is fun, but I also have experience on the other side as director, set designer, and speech supervisor. I directed and designed the set for a high school musical when the director was diagnosed with cancer after just casting the roles. I worked as a speech supervisor to encourage clear pronunciation and enunciation with many speaking drills in addition to various acting exercises.

I only offer theater lessons in person.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I learned the basics of cooking from my parents as a child. Living overseas, I have missed some of the foods I grew up with and experimented with ways of creating those dishes. I also enjoy trying ethnic foods and am often searching for new dishes to prepare. I enjoy cooking and have become quite good at it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in the elementary school classroom teaching English as a Foreign Language. This involved more than grammar and writing but also factored in general knowledge including math and science. I was always a good student, have a Bachelor's degree, and am confident in my ability to tutor Elementary (K-6th) subjects.

I am a certified teacher of English as a foreign or second language. I have taught ESL in the classroom setting and with individual students of all ages since 2008.

I was a language student in university with French as one of the languages I studied. I spent a semester in Paris studying French language, pronunciation, history, culture, literature, etc. I am comfortable teaching beginner and pre-intermediate level French. After that point, I can help recommend native speaking French teachers.

I started piano when I was 5 years old. I have studied music in university. I can teach others how to read music, position their hands, and play with emotion.

I studied Russian in university as a part of my International Languages Major. My studies included a semester abroad in Nizhni Novogorod, Russia. I have additional experience working for 7 years in Russia. I am a certified ESL Teacher and transfer my teaching knowledge of one foreign language to that of another. I am able to teach beginner levels of Russian.

I received a BA in International Languages. Spanish was one of the languages I studied. Included in my required studies was a semester abroad. I studied in an immersion program in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I took classes in Spanish language, history, literature, culture, etc. The focus during study abroad was on South America but I also spent time studying the European Spanish culture at my home campus. I am comfortable teaching beginners and pre-intermediate level learners.

Voice (Music)

I have studied voice for several years, including at the university level. I have participated in many choirs, performed in many shows or special events, and competed in a few competitions. I can help students find music appropriate for their voice, prepare for auditions, and improve their overall vocal performance.
