I'm young and a energetic sign language interpreter. I've been signing practically all my life because my brother is deaf. I don't believe in wasting countless hours studying a book because sign language is an expressive language, and the best way to learn is to be expressive and practice. I've used sign language to give speeches and presentations to groups ranging from as little as 10 to over 3,000. I believe learning the language should be fun and something that enriches your life.
I've taught 13 people sign language thus far, and their ages ranged from 6 years old to 63 so I'm comfortable with a variety of ages. My brother has downs syndrome so I'm even used to working with handicapped people.
Too my brother, though being 30 years of age, reads at about a 5th grade level because of his handicap. For years I have worked closely with him to improve in his reading and comprehension.
I myself am an avid reader and during high school and collage have taken classes in academic reading, literature, and critical reading. I'm young and a energetic sign language interpreter. I learned a lot from him and I started to gain more confidence in my signing skills as time went on. I liked that he had a variety of creative lesson plans it keeps it interesting. Affordable, flexible, and dependable!
Great tutor. My son had a wonderful experience and learned a great deal. I wish the summer was longer. I really wanted to continue the lessons to give my son some real world lessons outside of the norm.
Matthew is terrific. He taught five of my grandchildren (ages 7 to 11) sign language. By the end of the summer, they could sign "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". He was very patient with all of them. He is very knowledgeable. A very rewarding experience.
I have been working with Matt for about 4 lessons now (sign language) and very pleased so far. He is very approachable, creates an atmosphere for learning, and flexible with meeting times if I have to rearrange my schedule. He has shown a genuine interest in sign language as a whole as well as my goals behind learning it. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning sign language to just contact Matt for a meet and greet (he and I met at a local Starbucks for our meet/greet) and go from there.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been doing sign language for over 15 years now, and I'm only 23 years old. For I have been using the language to communicate with deaf people and too, this is my field of work. For I have interpreted in business, medical, educational, and religious settings. From small groups to an assemblies of people. Sign language interpreting is not just a job, but the language, people, and culture is just a part of my everyday life and has been for 15 years now.
