About Paul

I have always loved learning. From an early age, I wanted to understand how things worked. My curiosity was not limited to a single subject. I wanted to know about biology, chemistry, history and reading to name only a few. My parents also taught me a deep love of reading that has lasted to this very day. I still consume fiction and nonfiction books with the same ferocity as I did in my youth.

My educational history reflects this love of learning and far-flung interests. When I first went to college, I wanted to major in Biochemistry, but I found myself limited by the mathematical aspect of the curriculum, of which I had always struggled. Feeling lost, I turned to an old love of mine: History. Growing up in Virginia, I always had access to some of the most interesting portions of American history at my doorstep. It only took a few hours drive to get to a battlefield from the Revolutionary War or the Civil War or even our nation's Capital. History had always come easily to me, so I decided to pursue it for my degree.

After transferring schools and changing my major, I discovered a new facet to my love of learning: a love of teaching. Since high school, I have been involved with youth organizations, and as an adult, I now volunteer my time for the young people in those organizations. One summer while I was finishing up my undergraduate degree, I had the fortune to teach a class to some of the members of the group and found it invigorating. I had many of the students in that class take what they learned and use it that same day. I knew then that I wanted to teach for the rest of my life.

After finishing my undergraduate degree in history with minors in Political Science and American Studies, I pursued a graduate degree in Education, which I finished in 2015. During that time, I worked as a substitute teacher and instructional assistant and became certified to teach Social Studies.

With my background, I am prepared to tutor students in many of their subjects and can help with many of the challenges they will face in middle and high school. My driving motivation as a teacher is to see my students succeed. As a result of my master's coursework, I have many strategies to help students toward that success. My background through my undergraduate coursework has prepared me to assist students in finding success in whatever subject they might be working on.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American History is my favorite subject to study. Growing up in Virginia I was able to see many historical sites from the American Revolution as well as from the Civil War. I also minored in American Studies during my undergraduate degree.

European History

European History is a complicated subject that I enjoy teaching. During my undergraduate degree coursework, I learned a lot about the long history of Europe and its effect on the world. From the early Greeks to the modern European Union I can share my knowledge with you.

Government & Politics

I minored in Political Science during my undergraduate degree and its one of the most interesting subjects to teach. I taught a US Government class for my Student teaching while earning my certification to teach. My experience spans subjects like international politics, US government and politics, and Political Theory.

Reading

I have had a lifelong love of reading and I enjoy sharing that love with other people. I also have taken several classes focusing on teaching reading and reading strategies. I have experience teaching reading strategies for specific subjects as well as for general enjoyment.

Social Studies

My undergraduate degree in History and minor in Political Science are two of the largest disciplines of Social Studies. My further expertise through coursework for my M.Ed gives me a lot of experience with social study topics. I pursued a graduate degree in Education, which I finished in 2015. During that time, I worked as a substitute teacher and instructional assistant and became certified to teach Social Studies.

World History

World History is a great subject because it helps students understand the relationships between every civilization over time and can help them understand the world today better. I have had coursework in world history during my undergraduate degree including Latin American history, Asian history, and African history. These subjects and more are covered in world history courses and I am well equipped to help you understand them.
