In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my 15 years as an educator, I have taught students with both ADD & ADHD disabilities. One of the strategies I used to meet my students needs was to modify lessons, classwork and homework. One thing I learned as an educator was that it's not the quantity of work but the quality of the content of the work. Aspergers is along the spectrum of Autism. I have an 11 year-old nephew who has Aspergers. He has a special personality that is affectionate, humorous and very inquisitive. It's important to understand consistency and act proactively in modeling behavior, completing tasks and expectations for them. Sometimes even when unexpected things come up it's imperative to help them with a smooth transition by giving a simple statement that can be easily comprehended. As an experienced educator with over 15 years working in the Inclusion classroom setting, I have had wonderful experiences including students with Aspergers into my Social Studies, Health and Science portion of my classroom schedule.
As an ordained evangelist and now pastor, I have had over 15 years experience in studying the Bible. I have preached and taught the word of God for over 12 years. Prior to being the Sunday school superintendent I taught primary, preteen, teen, young adult and adult Sunday school classes using the curriculum from Word Aflame with Pentecostal Publishing Sunday school curriculum. I have had more than 10 years of experience educating elementary students from grades K-8. As an elementary school teacher I have had the privilege of teaching all subjects, including reading and language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. As an elementary teacher I have had more than 10 years of experience of teaching students how to read using the Open Court program, which teaches students to read phonetically. Phonics is the basic foundation of teaching word parts and word families to be recognized by young readers in order to decode words. One of the strategies to teaching phonics is to model to students how to blend sounds into words then words into sentences. I have also reinforced those skills through various approaches such as small group reading workshop, whole group reading, and one-on-one (teacher to student) strategy.

I have worked for the State of Maryland Health Department for 5 years conducting presentations and lectures for middle schoolers, the elderly and various workshops relating to the many federal and state funded programs we supervised and operated.
Elementary Reading is the building block or foundation to a student's educational career. Several approaches to help students be successful in reading can be taken phonetically, which shows students how to decode words and sentences. Another approach is by direct instruction, through which the student repeats words and sentences read to them by the teacher. It's important to encourage children to read and to expose them to many stories by reading to and/or with them.

CARE Rescources trained us as substitutes on the components of IEP (Individualized Education Plan) such as modifications, LRE (Least Restrictive Learning Environment), accommodations and goals which are to be measured by student progress.

As an educator, it is my responsibility to make modifications to my lesson plans, classwork, tests, quizzes and homework that would best meet their learning style. As an experienced educator I have taught students for over 10 years study habits to learn various skills. Most students learn a skill best by repetition and rote. Sometimes it's easier to help students who have large information to break it up into small bite sized chunks. Smaller chunks of information I find students can familiarize themselves with concepts I taught.
In my 12 years of teaching students I found taking the time to make special preparations to introduce vocabulary to students prior to reading any text. This strategy takes away apprehension of guessing what particular unfamiliar words out of the equation as they read. It help students make connections to the vocabulary in the text through investigation, prior knowledge and using secondary sources to give definition or meaning to the words.
