About Tom

My name is Tom. I tutor Spanish and English as a Second Language offline in area of Salisbury, Maryland, and online anywhere possible. I look forward to working with you to improve your knowledge of Spanish or English, whether for school, business, or cultural awareness. I'll tailor lessons to meet your needs, and I'm flexible regarding format, location, scheduling.

I took my Junior year of college at the University of Valencia in Spain to learn more about Spanish culture and linguistics. That invaluable immersion program supplemented the Bachelor of Arts degree I subsequently earned from Salisbury University in Maryland.

I have a certificate from Oxford Seminars and Johns Hopkins University to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages.

I retired from a 26-year job at the Department of Defense as a Spanish analyst and mid-level manager in 2007. This job required fine-tuned verbal and written communication skills in both Spanish and English.

I also translate and interpret Spanish to English and English to Spanish to help customers bridge communication gaps in advertising, requesting VISAs, publishing, improving health care, providing legal assistance, and other public/private services. I am certified as a translator but not as an interpreter or a full-fledged teacher (yet).

As an independent contractor, a volunteer career mentor at Salisbury University, and a member of the American Translators' Association, I am well-aware of the challenges in learning another language. It is my vow to help clients through this process in any way I can.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am very interested in helping non-native speakers learn the skills they need to understand more about the English language and American culture. I will tailor lessons to meet your specific needs, and I am flexible regarding formats, locations, and schedules for each session.

I graduated from a 60-hour course sponsored by Oxford Seminars in March of 2008 on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This seminar was offered at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. On completion of the class, I presented a practicum, which was approved Oxford Seminar evaluators, earning an internationally-recognized TESOL certificate.

I am qualified and ready to tutor you in any aspect of the English language, whether it is for business, school, fun, or other interests.

Spanish

As a member of the American Translators' Association, a volunteer career mentor, and an independent contractor, I understand the challenges in learning another language. I strive to help my clients in any way I can.

For over eight years, I've tutored Spanish language skills to teen and adult students at multiple levels in individual and classroom sessions. My biggest reward is to help others reach their goals for school, business, or cultural awareness.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland in 1981. Coursework for the degree included a year-long immersion program for advanced studies at the University of Valencia in Valencia, Spain. All courses were taught only in Spanish, and I lived with a Spanish family.

I also gained skills applicable to teaching during a 26-year career at the U.S. Department of Defense as a Spanish Analyst and Mid-Level Supervisor.

My resume is available on request.

Uses my interests to develop interesting lessons! — Thomas believes that if a lesson is interesting to the student, they learn more and retain more. Together we are developing lessons based on my interests, e.g. cooking, travel, etc. Because we both share a lot of the same interests, we have a lot of material to cover. I wanted lessons that pertained to everyday life so having lessons based on my interests fits perfectly! ...
