About Elizabeth

My name is Elizabeth, I am currently a Senior at St. Mary's College of Maryland majoring in Physics, with a double concentration in Applied and Fundamental Physics, and I am also doubling minoring in Mathematics and Educational Studies. I have done physics research at Georgetown University as well as the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

I have been working with children for approximately 7 years as a camp counselor, as well as a part-time teacher. I taught a variety of classes including World Cultures for students between the ages of 5 and 12, as well as a culinary class for the same age group. I have experience tutoring students between grades 7 and 12 in math, test prep, study skills and physics. I have experience working with students with ADHD and Aspergers. I am very good with working with students ranging from elementary school age through high school.

I am an extremely hands on teacher, and I am very flexible with my teaching style. I am here to help your child, or you, learn in the best way I can. My schedule is a slightly flexible this semester, but evenings after 5 work best for me on most days of the week.

I truly hope that I can help you achieve the academic success you want!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

While I did not take the ACT in high school, I did assist students who were going to take the ACT. I was studying for the SATs my Junior year of high school. As a study aid I also helped several students studying for the math and science portions of the ACTs. While they are different tests, they cover a multitude of the same topics and strategies for problem solving.

Algebra 1

I was a teaching assistant for an Algebra 1 class for high schoolers. I aided the teacher, and graded papers. I also assisted creating several lesson plans for nearly every topic discussed and taught.

Algebra 2

I have tutored many students in Algebra 2. The students have aged from 12-16. I have an extremely solid grasp on this topic as I have also created multiple lesson plans to aid students.

I am currently a math major in college. I took Calc A/B my junior year of high school and as a refresher course I took it again my freshman year of college. I passed the class with over 100%, and I ran multiple study groups for the class. During these study sessions, I helped students who were struggling with a multitude of topics.

Elementary Math

I have aided multiple elementary school children with math in after school programs that I volunteer at. I also worked with children at the camp I was a counselor at during specified learning times focusing mainly on the topics of math. I also worked very closely with many elementary school teachers to help their students with math.

Geometry is one of my very solid subjects. I am a huge proponent of the kinesthetic approach for this topic. Since it is such a visual class, I have found it to be a lot easier for students to understand how the topics apply to questions when they can touch the objects they are being questioned about.

I am extremely qualified to tutor Prealgebra. I have a very good understanding of how to teach and how to explain the topics of Prealgebra. I have tutored multiple middle schoolers on this topic.

Precalclus is a vital class for anyone learning upper level math; it combines some calculus topics and trigonometry. It can be difficult to grasp all of the topics it has to offer, but I am confident in my abilities to explain this class thoroughly for all different types of learners.

I took AP Psychology in high school. I passed the exam with a 5. I also tutored several students at a college level for the psychology 101 course.

SAT Math

I took the SAT twice during my high school career. My super-score was approximately 500-600 points above the average for the year I took the SATs. I have a good grasp on test taking strategies as well as the topics and how the test is designed. I would be a great help for the math section, especially, but I also scored a 720 on the writing section and a 700 on the reading so I would be able to assist students on all parts of the SAT.

Study Skills

I have assisted several students ranging from the ages of 10 and 16 in improving their study skills and habits. My methods include introducing flash cards, study environment techniques, lessening distractions, and a multitude of others. Each student studies and learns very differently and I think I would be able to assist most students in improving the way that they study.
