Towson University (Elementary Education)
I am a tenured teacher with Baltimore County Public Schools. I have been teaching elementary school for four years and have tutored students in small group and individual settings. As a teacher, I teach all elementary subjects: phonics/word work, reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and health. I have tutored mainly in math but am eligible to tutor reading and phonics, as well. I love to tutor because it is a great extension of my job. I can take what I have learned in the classroom with my 25 students and apply it one-on-one. It is rewarding to see the progress each week as a result of the individualized instruction that I provide.
Not only do I teach math each day in the classroom, I have also attended many math workshops offered through BCPS and MSDE. I also work one-on-one with our math mentor at my school once a week to deepen my understanding of effective math instruction. I have implemented various math curricula and tutoring programs to students of varying grades.
Reading is my passion! I enjoy teaching reading each day as well as reading on my own for pleasure. I have attended many workshops on reading instruction not only offered by BCPS and MSDE but national conferences, as well. Therefore, my knowledge of individualized reading instruction is vast.
I believe that a deep understanding of phonics is the foundation for becoming a successful reader and writer. I have worked with students at varying levels of phonics ability and differentiate instruction based on individual needs.
I am an enthusiastic teacher who puts in the time and effort to ensure the success of each of my students through individualized, differentiated instruction. I hope to work with you soon! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching phonics each day in my Elementary classroom for the four years that I have been teaching. I teach phonics at all levels, from students that are below grade level and are emergent readers to students that are above grade level and can read almost fluently. In my classroom, I assess students to determine how to instruct them in phonics and then instruct them at their level to improve their phonics skills.
