After graduating from the University of Maryland in 2017, I took my degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Math, to complete a year of service with City Year, Washington, DC. City Year is an education focused non-profit that provides individual and whole school supports in attendance, behavior, and course work. Specifically, I worked in a 6th grade Math classroom at Charles Hart Middle School in Southeast DC.

Throughout my college years I had student teaching observations in both PG County and Montgomery County and spanned classrooms from 2nd-5th grade. I also participated in America Reads*America Counts, tutoring students in math after school. I have loved spending this past year getting to know my 6th grade students at Charles Hart Middle School and am excited to start my teaching journey in my own 3rd grade math classroom this upcoming year at Cherokee Lane Elementary School in Prince George's County.

It is my teaching philosophy that every child can succeed and every child should be celebrated. Each child is on their own personal pathway to reaching their goals and I believe that each success along the way deserves recognition. My favorite part about tutoring is that it allows me to work individually with a child to find the methods and techniques that work best for them. Everyone is capable of reaching the same goal, it is just the steps that get us there that may vary.

I have taken multiple classes in math, as well as a variety of Praxis exams. I love working with students to find variety of methods and starting points for each problem or equation. I am a strong believer in breaking down the problems to the basic steps to ensure complete understanding.

I have experience teaching reading within second and fourth grade classrooms, using guided reading programs. I use a variety of texts that relate to the interests of the students and help teach techniques that they can use in their own reading and writing endeavors.

I have experience teaching spelling within second and fourth grade classrooms, using the Words Their Way resources. Using these word sort charts, I work with the students to identify spelling patters, as well as relating the words to pictures and objects that have meaning for the students.

I am looking forward to working with you to find the best techniques and methods for your student! Please contact me with any questions you may have or to discuss next steps for planning the best lessons!

Skilled and Professional Tutor with great People Skills

Katie recently began tutoring our 2nd grader in math and so far we are pleased with the change in mindset that our child has toward math. We know this is a result of the patience and knowledge Katie has and that she is very pleasant overall. We highly recommend her to others!

Engaged and Excited in Math

I have noticed that after the last few sessions with Katie, Gabrielle has become more confident in solving her math problems. She has even taken the iniatitive of researching math problems to practice what she has learned from Katie. I am really impressed with Katie's approach with capturing her attention and getting her to be really excited about learning.
