About Michael

Hello! My name is Michael, and I am a recent college graduate from the University of Maryland looking for a career that is fulfilling and active. Throughout my life, I have been told that I am very good at making complex and confusing concepts easy to understand. This ability has been refined over the years, particularly in college. There, as I earned my history degree, I learned the process of "synthesizing": Taking the overwhelming volume of facts presented to me and getting to what was essential and relevant to understand a topic, event, or phenomenon. Aside from academic ability, I am also very adept at understanding not only where, but why individuals are struggling, and using this emotional intelligence, I can offer a solution that reflects the students unique strengths and weaknesses.

I have often been told that I would be great teacher, but I would prefer a career that is less static and more active. Because of this, tutoring seems like the perfect fit for me! As a new college grad, I don't have much formal experience tutoring, but I have the desire, knowledge, and skills to help someone struggling succeed!

I have excellent reading and writing skills due to years of practice. When I was growing up, my mother made extensive efforts to teach me good writing skills. this included both grammar and syntax. That is to say, I mastered not only how to spell and conjugate properly, but how to organize my ideas in a way that is eye-catching and engaging to the reader. A product of nearly a decade of tutoring myself, I've developed an almost intuitive sense of what to do, and what not to do, when writing essays, papers, or other academic works.

I have always had a love of history, the stories that explain the world today, as well as reveal the persistent patterns of humanity repeated through the centuries. Because of this passion, I did particularly well in these classes, as the motivation to learn everything made studying easy. More than history, I also found government structures and politics to be fascinating, and so excelled in those topics as well. These subjects reveal patterns of thought and practice in human interaction, I believe that my understanding of these patterns is what allows me to easily explain the often complex topics encountered in Social Study courses.

One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain says that "the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great", and it serves as an apt description of my philosophy. I have found that my most fulfilling work was when I knew I was making someone's life better. But the final, most important reason I want to tutor is the fact that I was a struggling student myself not so long ago. My teachers all told me they thought I was smart, yet many subjects seemed almost impossible for me to understand. Because I had tutors who were dedicated and sympathetic, I was able to overcome these obstacles and end up scoring highly in the SATs. I am so glad that I am in a position where I can help others the way I was helped, to let students struggling know that they CAN achieve academic success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
