About Daniel

Hi!

I am a college professor who has been both tutoring students of a wide variety of ages (6-25!) and teaching science at the college level for close to 20 years. The subjects in which I specialize in tutoring includes all levels of mathematics from basic math through college calculus, test preparation for SAT/ACT/GRE/MCAT, English language, writing, general and organic chemistry, general biology, genetics, physiology, developmental biology and introductory physics. I have worked with young people in many different capacities my entire life and those who have worked with me find me relaxed, approachable and fun to work with.

About me: I have a B.A. in chemistry and English from Rice University, an MD and PhD (developmental and molecular biology) from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. I did postdoctoral work at Princeton University and I have been teaching in a variety of subjects including biochemistry, bacterial and general genetics, general chemistry, physiology, cell biology, anatomy, developmental biology and molecular biology at the schools above as well as the United States Naval Academy and continue to do so in the Washington DC metropolitan area. I have also worked very closely with talented college students aspiring to become physicians as well as some who have competed successfully for international scholarships. Several hundred of my former students currently attend medical school, are working in residencies and practicing medicine in hospitals and in private practice all over the United States. Several of my students have also won Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, Mitchell and Fulbright fellowships.

Thoughts on teaching: I believe in establishing close working relationships with all of my students and take a great deal of pleasure in watching them work hard and helping them to succeed in whatever area they seek to improve. My favorite part of tutoring is in helping instill the love of whatever subject I am asked to teach in the students I work with. Invariably, when this happens, performance and confidence improves! I understand that different students learn in different ways and work diligently to find different approaches to learning that will match each student. I continue to correspond with many of the students I have taught and take tremendous pleasure in the many life-long relationships I have had the privilege to have through teaching.

The very best tutors in any subject are invariably those who have some understanding of what it feels like to struggle at that subject in ways that force them to think creatively about how to solve problems from many different perspectives. They are usually not people who tend to pick up such ideas intuitively but rather can deconstruct a subject or topic into pieces that students who are just beginning to learn that subject or topic can easily understand.

If you are genuinely interested and ambitious about learning either for its own sake or because you have specific educational goals you wish to reach AND if you value the kind of learning relationship that a one-on-one teaching scenario can provide, we might be a good fit and I urge you to give me a try.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have over 20 years of experience teaching (college) and tutoring (high school and college) general chemistry. My students at Navy were consistently among the top 5% (of over 1100) taking the general chemistry course based on their performance on freshman student-body-wide midterm exams and finals. For this (and other accomplishments), I received the Apgar teaching award, the highest award Navy gives its junior civilian faculty.

Genetics

I am trained as both a Drosophila geneticist (PhD) and a bacterial geneticist (postdoctoral fellowship) with several papers published in these subjects. I have also taught or assisted in teaching genetics at the collegiate level at three different institutions (Princeton, United States Naval Academy, Georgetown - where I currently teach genetics). Lastly, I have worked one-on-one with both college students and graduate students in helping them master this subject.

MCAT

I have been preparing pre-medical students for the MCAT for over 10 years largely via one-on-one sessions with undergraduates at both Navy and Georgetown where I now teach. I now have over 100 such students who can currently be found at medical schools, residencies and hospitals all over the United States and within the US military. I have an MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and have trained extensively in (and have both taught and tutored) most of the subjects (i.e. biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physiology, genetics, cell biology, reading comprehension, etc.) that the new 2015 MCAT currently tests.

Microbiology

MD degree (Johns Hopkins), postdoctoral fellowship in microbial genetics (Princeton University), have taught both microbiology, genetics and molecular biology at multiple institutions, multiple publications in microbiology.

Physiology

I have an MD (Johns Hopkins) where I took coursework in physiology and pathophysiology. I have taught human physiology, neurobiology and neuroanatomy to undergraduates for nearly 10 years and will, in fact, be teaching physiology at the collegiate level in the DC area.
