About Lisa

I have been teaching for 15 years with Montgomery County Public Schools. I am certified in early childhood education, elementary education, ESOL, secondary education, and reading specialist. I love working with students one on one; helping them to reach their fullest potential. I am a certified reading specialist, academic intervention teacher and am familiar with the common core in grades K-5. My experience teaching in the Montgomery County school system has given me an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the standards-based curriculum that students are challenged with every day. Through my broad experience as both a classroom teacher and a small group academic intervention teacher, I understand and appreciate that students have different learning styles. I have strategies that make learning fun and meet the different needs of my students.

I am a certified reading specialist, academic intervention teacher and work with grades K-5. I work with a variety of research based reading intervention programs in addition to the common core curriculum.

I work with teachers and students daily in an MCPS school. We use the common core curriculum. I have access to all materials and resources.

Reading skills are the foundation of success in a students school career. Phonics programs and many other research based intervention programs can help students who are reading below grade level to achieve success and move ahead.

I work with many students who have 504 plans or IEPs. Organizational skills and study skill strategies are apart of my specialty with my students. Success begins with good organizational skills. Let me help your student get an edge!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am a certified early childhood, elementary and secondary teacher working in Montgomery County Public Schools. I have been teaching with MCPS for 15 years. In addition, I have a reading specialist certification. I am familiar with common core, as we u have been using at my school for the past 3 years. I teach 5th grade reading common core curriculum. Last year, I taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grade common core reading. I've also taught 3rd and 4th grade common core math.

Phonics

As a certified reading specialist and reading intervention teacher, I work with students using research based reading intervention programs. Many of these programs are phonics based decoding programs.

Reading

I've been teaching for over 15 years with Montgomery County Public Schools. I am certified in early childhood education, elementary education, ESOL, and as a reading specialist. I have strategies that make learning fun and meet the different needs of my students. Reading skills are the foundation of success in a student’s school career. Through the use of phonics programs, comprehension programs, and many other research-based intervention programs, I can help students who are reading below grade level to achieve success and move ahead. In addition, I work with many students who have 504 plans or IEPs. Organizational skills and study skill strategies are a part of my specialty with my students. Study Skills

As teacher for 15 years, I have had the experience of working with many students that have IEPs, 504 plans among other special accommodations. For many of these students, study skills and organizational skills was an area of need. I am skilled at breaking things down for my students, chunking assignments, using graphic organizers, flash cards/index cards, high lighting, helping students move into a color coded and/or binder system to help keep themselves organized. Studying is hard for many students. Students learn in many different ways: auditory learners, visual learner, kinesthetic learners and tactile learners all have ways of learning that are not the same. I am adept at helping students discover how they learn best and differentiating studying materials to help them learn best.
