About Josh

I've tutored students in-person and online (Statistics, Algebra, Chess, Study Skills, R Studio platform for statistical computing, Technical Writing and Nutrition) all over the United States. Please read my unsolicited recommendations in the Review section below to get more insight on my skills and tutoring style!

Statistics / Algebra- I've helped a lot of elementary, middle school, high school and college students pass tests, improve grades and deepen their understanding in a subject that can be challenging. As a former returning student myself, I can help everyone: from returning students who haven't dealt with Math/Statistics in a long time, to those students who are looking to bring up their grade to students working on their Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.

Software - I can use R Programming, StatCrunch and SPSS.

Chess - I've also done quite a bit of private chess tutoring, for individuals and groups. I am a Chess Coach for elementary schools in Maryland and Virginia. I have a 1730 USCF rating and an "Expert" performance rating. My goal when chess tutoring is for the student to come away from the lesson with useful ideas that can be applied in both casual and tournament games. In addition, I believe that my enthusiasm for the game is picked up by the student.

Study Skills - I've helped students of all ages to organize schedules, complete assignments and unlock their potential. I draw from my own struggles in high school and college. Currently working with a student for only four weeks and he has brought up his grades dramatically! Suffice to say, his parents have more energy to focus on the many other challenges in life..... relaxing for instance!

Background/Statistical Programming - My PhD program was very interdisciplinary and included Math, Statistics, Nutrition, Toxicology, Advanced Biochemistry, Exposure Science, Public Health Policy, Computer Programming in R and technical writing that led to 5 peer-reviewed publications. I've tutored students using R programming for an array of different majors taking Statistical courses. We used R to generate graphical and numerical summaries, as well as predictive modeling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a strong understanding of Algebra which was essential as a foundation for Calculus courses I took in graduate school. I love the problem-solving nature of Algebra and this comes across while I tutor. Feel free to contact me and we can set up a time that works for you.

Chess

I am a strong intermediate level chess player with a modern approach to chess lessons. I use my critical thinking skills developed as a PhD student to teach chess. I offer a comprehensive approach to improving your game, which includes over-the-board instruction and utilization of computer software and online resources.

Elementary Math

I enjoy teaching Elementary Math! It is such a practical skill that can be used in daily life. I can show students the importance of math and where it can take them using some examples of my own educational pursuits.

Nutrition

I have a PhD in Nutritional Biology. My experience obtaining the PhD includes taking Biochemistry, Advanced Nutrition, Statistics and other courses. So far I've helped Nutrition students complete assignments and take tests.

Statistics

Strong grasp of the fundamentals of Statistics. I used intermediate and advanced statistical techniques during the development of my PhD dissertation. I believe that my application of Statistics for several projects strengthened my knowledge, allowing me to provide practical examples that students can relate to.
