About Arlan

I've always had a solid background in Mathematics, Science, and Language. Before I was born, my mother tutored Math, Spanish, and French while my stepfather tutored Advanced Math and Advanced Physics. He also happens to be fluent in 5 languages (not including English). I was incubated in an academic environment so I had a natural aptitude for academia.

I was born on and grew up on the island of Antigua; in the Caribbean. Our school system is based on the British system which is more rigid than the American schooling system. This gave me a natural advantage in college in the United States where I earned my Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering and recently received my Professional Science Masters in Water Resources Management.

I never wanted to be a tutor because I didn't want to follow in the footsteps of my mother or my stepfather. Becoming a math tutor was the only on campus job that offered me any semblance of freedom so I took that job. Because of my laid back approach, non-confrontational personality, and my ability to break down complex mathematical equations and operations into easily absorbent lessons, I soon built up a reputation as the go-to tutor. This was a blessing and a curse because I earned countless referrals from satisfied students which led me to take on an overwhelming workload. At the end of it all, I found that I really enjoyed helping people and tutoring was the perfect opportunity.

Tutoring others has the same effect as a refresher course. A few of my professors told me, "If you want to truly learn something, go home and teach it to your grandmother." Basically, if you can break down something to a non-technical, non-expert in the field, you truly have a firm grasp on the material. Tutoring gives me a firmer grasp on the subject material. I learn while helping others to learn.

I have completed Math courses up to Differential Equations (excluding Calculus 3). the requirement to be an on campus Math Tutor at my school was that I had to have completed up to Calculus 2 with a grade B or better. With the good referrals from my professors as well as my grades I was able to land the job.

I have always made time for people who genuinely need help, even to the detriment of my own grades suffering. My time as a math (English proofreader and paper editor, Physics) tutor was a heavy cross to bear but I'd gladly do it again because I can't say no to a genuine request for help.

If you've made it this far and choose to hire me as your tutor, I will gladly rise to the occasion and accept. If I'm not in your local area, I'm more than willing to tutor you online. Wyzant provides an online tutoring tool and if you're familiar with Team Viewer, even better.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring Pre-Algebra and Calculus 2 for the past 3 years so SAT Math will be a walk in the park.
