About Ashley

Hey! My name is Ashley J. I am currently a first grade teacher for Loudoun County Public Schools and a graduate student at George Mason University. I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a bachelor's in psychology and elementary education. I also received dual endorsement in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). I have diverse experiences working with learners from toddlers to adults. I have worked part-time at a childcare center for several years teaching children ages 2 - 12. I traveled to the Dominican Republic for a summer where I taught English language skills and basic Spanish literacy to campers ages 4 - 16. During the summer of 2014, I taught middle school students with Breakthrough Collaborative Miami. My primary position was grade 8 history teacher, but I also taught writing workshop. While in college, I tutored adult non-native English speakers once a week through a campus organization. I also traveled to a local middle school to provide after school tutoring for struggling learners.

My approach is to engage each learner in the learning process by modeling, building skills, and making learning fun!

As an certified elementary educator, I am certified to teach mathematics for grades pre-k through 6. In the classroom, I develop and implement weekly math games to provide my students with fun ways to practice and build their math skills. I help my students to build confidence in their mathematical ability by incorporating hands-on learning. I have also tutored an 11th grade student in Algebra 1. Each week I provided homework assistance and a mini lesson on an algebra skill. I have taken and excelled in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus.

Reading and writing are both integral parts of education and necessary for success in all subjects. As an elementary educator, I understand the importance of developing and enhancing reading and writing skills. As a summer counselor, I helped students ages 4-16 develop English skills. I also have extensive experience tutoring ESL with elementary, middle school, and adult students. In the classroom, I have worked with learners to develop reading comprehension strategies, writing skills, and vocabulary. Each year my students have experienced substantial improvement in reading.

As an elementary educator, I am familiar with the content and structure of the SOL tests. I have successfully taught test taking strategies and helped students feel prepared for the tests. My dual endorsement in ESL qualifies me to teach learners grades pre-k through 12. I am familiar with the state of Virginia curriculum. I am great at teaching test preparation skills and the content which will enable my learners to be successful on the GED.

I have worked with students in various environments including in the public schools, a summer camp, tutoring, and an after school program.

I have experience working with a range of students on their phonics. I use fun activities that allow students to work on phonemic awareness by manipulating words and sounds verbally and visually. Over the years, I have collected many resources to help students reach success. I have taken elementary reading/language arts courses and TESOL methods courses which have both equipped me with the necessary skills for teaching phonics and phonemic awareness.

As a teacher, I understand that each learner is unique. It is my mission to meet each of my students' individual needs. If you need help learning a skill or building confidence in your ability, contact me today. Let's have fun learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

While enrolled at the College of William and Mary, I took the following applicable courses: Literature and the Bible, History and Religion of Ancient Israel, and Christian Origins. Each of these course have provided me with necessary content knowledge to successfully tutor Bible studies. I have also served as the youth leader of my church for one year.

Elementary (K-6th)

I completed the elementary education program through the College of William and Mary School of Education. While enrolled in the program, my student teaching was in a grade 2 classroom. I have also worked as a camp counselor teaching English language skills to students ages 4- 16 in the Dominican Republic.

Handwriting

I am currently a preschool teacher at a childcare center. I work with my students on letter formation. I completed student teaching in a grade 2 classroom. One of the grade 2 SOLs is to develop and practice cursive writing skills.

Phonics

I took a TESOL methods course through the modern languages department at the College of William and Mary. The course provided great detail about phonics, phonemic awareness, and how to teach them. I also took elementary language arts and reading curriculum and instruction through the College of William and Mary School of Education. Through this course I learned the details of teaching phonics to early readers and helping older students improve their phonics skills.

SOL

As part of the elementary education teaching program, each of my lessons that I designed targeted one or more SOLs. While teaching grade 2 and tutoring students in the public schools, all of my lessons were developed around standards (SOLs).

Study Skills

During the summer of 2014, I taught grade 8 students through a summer program called Breakthrough Miami. As a grade 8 academic teacher, I led an advisory period before lunch each day. During advisory, I met with students individually to help them develop academic study skills, work through social struggles, develop academic goals, and set up a plan to reach their goals.
