I have years of experience tutoring a wide variety of populations. At the moment, I am tutoring adults in English as a Second Language. I currently have students from several different countries, all with unique needs. I take a very practical, real-world approach, teaching vocabulary each student needs for his or her particular social and professional situations. I have helped people write and edit resumes, practice oral presentations, and taught vocabulary for parent-teacher school conferences. I especially enjoy helping students improve their pronunciation and intonation and helping them become more confident.
I prefer to work weekdays -- I am available from 9:00 am to about 4:00 pm Mon- Fri. This generally means that I am a better schedule fit for college students and other adult learners. I have also occasionally worked with children in homeschooling programs. I am happy to have a short initial meeting, free of charge, to assess the student's level of knowledge and see if we are a good personality match. For students who would like only conversation practice, with corrections and pronunciation improvement, but no prepared materials, hourly rate is reduced to 30$/hour.
Karin is such a knowledgeable and patient teacher that her lessons and tips are helping me a lot with my pronunciation, intonation, etc. We went over the common characteristics of English pronunciation and she gave me plenty of exercises to practice stress and intonation. My pronunciation and intonation got improved a lot. Highly recommended.
Karin have listen my needs and have found how to respond to it. She helped me to be more confident and encourage me to dare to speak out! She cared the lesson stay fun and we did a lot of different things (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, idiomas, ...)
We've enlisted Karin's help for almost three months now. She has been nothing short of knowledgeable and helpful, in addition to being reliable and generally versatile with the timing of lessons. A very positive experience.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring in ESL for about 5 years, including two years at the Literacy Council of Montgomery County. Depending on the student's skill level, we may start with basic alphabet sounds and letter formation all the way up to advanced reading and writing. I take a very practical approach, emphasizing real-world vocabulary and conversation. I have worked with students to help them understand their children's homework and practice everyday situations such as teacher conferences and medical appointments, and have taught and practiced vocabulary needed for their professions. I have also proofread and edited resumes and cover letters for many of my students.
At the initial meeting, I do a thorough assessment of the student's strengths and problem areas in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. I pride myself on helping the student feel comfortable during our lessons and increasing their confidence.
