About Christopher

Christopher Allen Varlack earned his PhD in English from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he specializes in the areas of nineteenth and twentieth century American literature with an emphasis on race. He has an MFA in Creative Writing (2010) from the Stonecoast MFA in Writing Program and a BA in Communications with a Writing Specialization (2008) from Loyola College, now Loyola University Maryland.

His current research interests include literature and culture of the Harlem Renaissance and its lasting impact on African-American artistic expression, particularly in the works of prominent figures including Langston Hughes, Wallace Thurman, and Claude McKay. His current writing interests include the lyric and rhizomatic essay, blending poetic expression with traditional non-fiction forms. Ultimately as both a writer and scholar, he is interested in how literature can preserve or reclaim the voices of the past, shedding new light on the struggles and the people who essentially define who we are today.

He is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where he teaches courses in composition, research writing, grammar and usage, and creative writing. He has recently published book chapters in Critical Insights: Zora Neale Hurston (Salem 2013) as well as Critical Insights: The Slave Narrative (Salem 2014) and Defining Documents in American History: Manifest Destiny (Salem 2013) with works forthcoming in several edited collections and encyclopedias. He is also the editor of Critical Insights: Harlem Renaissance (Salem 2015).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam.
