During the academic year, I teach ESOL ( English as a second language) which focuses on reading writing, speaking, and listening in English for students new to the English language.
Currently, I teach in MCPS, in grades K-5, but spend my majority of time in K and 5th grade. For kindergarteners, I specialize in prereading skills (letter identification and letter sounds), reading, writing, handwriting, and vocabulary. For older students, I specialize in reading, reading comprehension, writing, editing, and study skills.
I am a Certified Montgomery County Public School teacher in Elementary Education, ESOL certification, 7 years teaching experience in the public school system and 7 years teaching experience in a preschool. In between, I developed my own phonics and reading tool kit called, Alphabet Activity Box, in which parents worked with their preschool age children to teach them to read and write. These activities used "chunk" books, manipulative, games, etc so that pre-readers could learn their letters and corresponding sounds in a fun and interactive way.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like me to preload your child with skills for the upcoming year or help them in areas they are struggling in currently. We needed a tutor to get my son back on track with his previous reading group and we met that goal. With Alison's writing & reading assistance my son the gained enthusiasm he needed to dig in & catch up.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an ESOL teacher in MCPS, I work with grades K-5. I work closely with the teachers to suppliment what the students are learning in class. I co-teach curriculum with them so that the students are presented with a double dose of the curriculum. In doing so, I am able to front load vocabulary for them, as well as scafold instuction to meet their needs. I use the whole language approach along with MCPS's 2.0 curriculum to address county core standards and integrate them with reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In doing so, students are exposed to an integrated curriculum that focuses on the common core.
As an ESOL teacher for MCPS I focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I primarily work with the primary grades teaching letters and their corresponding sounds, blends, diagraphs, vocabulary, reading, and writing etc. In doing so, I focus on handwriting, letter formation, spacing between words, and sentence development. I teach them how to hold the pencil, where to start and stop on the baselines, the the formation of capital letters and lower cases.

An an ESOL teacher, my primary emphasis is on reading, writing, speaking, and listening. When focusing on reading for the primary grades, we work on letters, sounds, blends, diagraphs, stretching out words, and then using words to write both simple and compound sentences. Once these skills have been mastered, the focus is on comprehension, reading for understanding, and story elements. There is much over lap with reading in the content areas which provides students with an added bonus of addressing the core curriculum.
I have tutored students in study skill previously. I teach students the foundations for studying. Primarily, I focus on reading for a purpose, turning the question around to find the answers, outlining, note taking, and test preparation skills. These are skills that students entering middle school, have not been exposed to. Most students do not know how to study and lack the skills necessary to prepare for exams. So the skills I teach provide kids with a foundation for where and how to begin.
