About Meridith

I am an ivy league educated professional with a J.D. and work experience in higher education. I have always been passionate about education and helping other people. Additionally, I absolutely love children and am a parent myself. As such, I understand the importance of making sure your child is succeeding and learning at an age-appropriate level both for the benefit of learning and to boost confidence. I am extremely patient and organized and feel personally rewarded when I am able to help someone learn something new or understand a new concept. One of the most important ways to work toward positive results is to understand the person with whom you are working and what his/her learning style is. Everyone grasps concepts in different ways and at different rates. I modify my tutoring approach based on the individual's needs and comfort level.

I was a Psychology major in college and have been in counseling positions for the last 10 years. My approach involves spending some initial time discussing what the client's needs or concerns are in order to make sure I understand the goal. From there I discuss possible approaches, suggesting more than one to see what would work best for the client and motivate him/her the most, and then beginning the work. I try to make learning fun but am results oriented. Tutoring is a customer service position so I do modify my approach and assistance based on what the client's expectations are. I hope to have the opportunity to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

For the last 6.5 years I have been working as a career development counselor. My job includes providing personalized meetings to understand the individual's concerns/goals, reviewing resumes and cover letters, preparing individuals for interviews, sharing job search and strategy resources, exploring networking ideas, etc. I have helped people: (1) figure out what type of job they are looking for given their interests and skills; (2) secure their first job; and (3) move forward with career changes and professional development. I am extremely well versed in this field.

Law

I am a graduate of a top 20 law school, am admitted to the Bar in two jurisdictions and practiced law (litigation). Additionally, I spent 7 years working in law schools.

Proofreading

I have spent most of my career proofreading resumes, cover letters, and essays. I believe it is important to examine the macro and micro elements of the paper. I begin by making sure the paper makes sense, is clear, flows well, and adequately conveys the intended message. I then look more closely to fix any sentence structures, redundancy, word choice, etc. Finally, one I feel that the content is strong I will fine tune the paper and check for correct grammar, punctuation, spacing, and other details. I work with the student in doing this and help him/her so that he/she learns how to be a stronger writer.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a skill that I learned at a very young age. I was taught key elements to command attention and build confidence. I was then given a more formal training in public speaking in law school, which was furthered by my experience as a trial attorney. I presented many arguments in court before judges. Additionally, in my current job as a career adviser, I have moderated many panels and conducted my own seminars. I am able to teach the skills it takes to (1) feel more comfortable in front of an audience and (2) engage the audience.

Writing

Strong writing skills are necessary in order to be a successful lawyer. These skills were honed and utilized in law school and throughout my career. I can help with basic paragraph structure, creative writing, persuasive writing, and factual analyses.

Meredith knows what's she's talking about and has great strategies to increase confidence in public speaking. Very comfortable to work with for someone who fears public speaking

I just started working with Meredith and I am already excited for my next lesson. She is very experienced and has credibility (as she was a lawyer and knows what she's talking about). Meredith is very intelligent and really wants to get to know the students she's working with so she can be the best resource possible. I felt incredibly comfortable with Meredith and that she really listened to my go
