About Matthew

Greetings!

Allow me to tell you a bit about my professional qualifications, fields of study, and teaching philosophy.

I earned my doctorate in 2010 specializing in U.S. Foreign Relations and International History. My research as a graduate student focused on the historical developments of the 20th century, but my teaching career has spanned the spectrum of historical eras. Over the years, I have taught numerous college-level courses in American History (pre-Columbian through to the present) and Western Civilization (Antiquity to 1648). I also possess extensive knowledge of Asian Civilization, World History, and specialized topics such as Diplomatic History.

As an Adjunct Assistant Professor, I have taught both traditional and non-traditional students from a host of backgrounds which has resulted in rich and rewarding experiences. In addition to formal classrooms settings, I have also met with students on an individual basis to help with testing strategies for exams, providing tips for the writing of book reviews, and editing drafts of written work.

I encourage questions from those I am teaching and tutoring and present material and historical concepts in a way that is easy to comprehend. Doing so, allows students to identify and trace historical trends and strengthen individual critical thinking skills.

I look forward to the possibility of helping make the field of history more interesting to and accessible for you.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
